Have you taken levetiracetam (Keppra)?

Posted by Ryman @ryman, Aug 29, 2017

I have been prescribed Keppra for seizures. I have never actually had a seizure but the neurologist says that some of the weird things going on with me are related to seizures. I really don't get on well with meds and am concerned about this one. Has anyone else taken it? Thank you.

@joedavid

if you research the ingredients in keppra it has titanuim dioxide in it a carcinegen that causes cancer and it has aluminum also which is damaging to the brain.the pharmacies what to make sure you keep having problems and have to keep taking meds and most plls are from china and india and our fda has no control over not that the fda would do anything anyway it is all about money

Hi @joedavid could you please post or send me a reference that gives titanium dioxide as an ingredient in Keppra? I couldn’t find one, or aluminum
Thanks, Val

@jakedduck1 Leonard l want to ask you a question, like l said before l am still falling and have been since my first brain injury. Now since 2014 it's been getting worse you never no when it's going to happen. The neurologist l had said l had partial seizure. Now the neurologist l have or you might say had said its non-epelitic seizures. I just fell recently at my doctors off ice and had to go to the hospital and the same diagnosis but l am still on keppra and sometimes my speech will be slurred, tremors and unable to walk. I confused if its seizures or non epileptic seizures. I have had so many neurologist and have had different diagnoses and l have had convulsions and sometimes l can be conscious or unconscious. Just thought l would ask you since you have had seizures for along time.

Hi Lisa @techi
I know from my own experience it can been extremely exhausting and frustrating to find the right diagnosis and the right treatment regimens. I have several different types of seizures as a result of a car accident. However through my journey we discovered I actually was having partial seizures my entire life and the accident was a trigger to more aggressive types. Please continue following your md advice. I know 4 years is a long time. It took 11 years, 17 different medications, horrible side effects, before my doctors figured out the right treatment. I finally went to Mayo Clinic and went through the seizure clinic

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/epilepsy/care-at-mayo-clinic/mac-20350102

and they put me on tegretal which has kept me seizure free for 8 years now!! I use to have seizures daily before.

I pray you find your right treatment soon.

I have been suffering from seizures since 1995. Each episode can be as many as five that have left me unconscious. Fortunately, my wife has been present on each event and has taken care of me each time.
I have throughout these years been seen by four diffenent neurologists because of changes of locations where I have lived.
What drew me to this site was the discussion about Levetricetam (Keppra). I am taking 1500 mg twice a day or 3000 mg daily.

Hi @lethargic welcome to Connect! You may have noticed I moved your post to this ongoing discussion on levetiracetam (Keppra) so you can read more on what others have said about their experience. I also wanted to point out this discussion as well for more thoughts on levetiracetam (Keppra): https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/decreasing-keppra/

I also wanted to bring in @ryman @techi @robertjr @bonnieh218 as they have used this medication and may have some thoughts on it as well.

How has levetiracetam (Keppra) been working for you? Has it made a difference in the frequency or severity of your seizures?

Lethargic-Daily 3000 mg Levetricetam reply:

Besides Levetrcetam, I am also taking large doses of phenobarbital and significant doses daily of lamotrgine (lamictal).

There are other medicines I am taking for other unrelated conditions to my seizures so I cannot isolate how much the Levetricetam is helping me.

Hi, @lethargic - wondering if you could share a bit more about your experiences with seizures and with the Levetricetam (Keppra). I noted you said you've had seizures since 1995. How frequently have you had seizures?

Have you had any side effects (that you can isolate with taking other medications) from the Levetiracetam (Keppra)?

@lethargic
Just curious, would you mind sharing how much Phenobarbital and Lamottgine you’re taking.

I always kept complaining to my doctors about my allergies until l was blue in the face. When l was in the hospital in 2014 for the HE the doctors had put me on keppra. Now this is 4yrs after the episode happened. It was a crazy thing that happened. Your mom goes on a women's church cruise feeling a little stressed from all the different diagnoses and the biggest one mentally disturbed and she was prayed for and came back home to a new granddaughter and then what happens next elevated ammonia level. What was this new diagnosis and the doctors had no clue. But God knew and whatever is to come out in the open always does. Sometimes we just have to wait patiently. But when l was in the hospital one of the meds l was allergic to was Keppra. I didn't know this l wasn't conscious until l got to rehab. I don't really know if it was because l was combative or they had to keep me drugged to keep me out of pain. But the medicine l was allergic to when l was in rehab the new neurologist gave to me again. I know you might be saying they should have known that but they didn't. Then the neurologist who gave it to me left for a few months. Then to find out he comes back to his practice and now l am finished with neurologicist. Now this is me, not all are the same but l was through. Then God blessed and he began telling me where to search about the meds l was taking. And l found out some was being recalled and even my insurance company was putting warning flags on the meds l was taking. No one checked. God has allowed me to be a blessing to some many people while l was going through this, that he put people there for me. And so there are so many people going through things but God doesn't want us to focus on those things but towards him. And it not about race, nationality, age or any of those things. It just about God and l know sometimes we will wonder why has it happened to me. It's not a punishment it really true love because we have to think about others not ourselves. And when we put him first he will show you great and mighty things. I went to the mayo clinic only for one reason not because l didnt believe l wasn't healed. It was to make my doctors see that they messed up. And when l came back and went to church yesterday everyone was overjoyed by my great report. So now this morning l am going for another test for my breast. At first report everything was great and this was since July of this year. Then l get a letter and they said they need to do a MRI of my breast and now today an ultrasound. It had to be rescheduled l was un the hospital having my appendix taken out. But the mayo clinic asked me last year about if l had a mammogram. And l get them every year. Since my mom had breast cancer. So when you first hear something is wrong naturally you have fear but instead l am not. I knew this was going to come God has already gotten me prepared. I am going to be prayed up and l going to anoint my breast. Then when l go in before the tech does anything l am praying. You got to get bold. And l know " No weapon formed against me is going to prosper because my God can do all things. He has already done it with my memory and l know he will do it again. I have to just ask. He says you have not cause you ask not. And my mother was a firm believer. She was molested by her own sisters husband and that weighted her down for years. But when she found God it was different. And l really don't think none of her nieces know that their who they thought was their cousin was really there half brother. And l don't know even if her own sister knew but God always did. So when she left this world and she just died she outlived a her legacy so far. And everyone always talks about her and she went through breast cancer and she won the battle because God was on her side. So l got to go and get ready for this test.

Hi, @techi - I've merged your post about your experience with allergy to levetiracetam (Keppra) here, where you and members like @lethargic @jakedduck1 @dawn_giacabazi @joedavid had previously been discussing this medication.

How did your recovery go from being given this medication to which you were allergic?
