Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?

Posted by tj @tjanet, Nov 13, 2024

Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs, high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

Thanks, good info…i actually just mix a small amount with other kidney friendly fruits… fortunately i don’t have diabetes or HBP and am not severely restricted at this point. Due to frequent oncology testing, I can watch my numbers to see if there are concerning trends.

I got dehydrated about a year ago and was taken to the ER. They gave me fluids and ran a lot of tests. My doctor came in and told me all my testing for all my organs and brain are fine. There was no evidence of a stroke or anything else to be concerned about. She told me what I needed was to add electrolytes to my water daily and now I drink 2 - 16 oz. glasses with electrolytes. You mentioned coconut water and that does contain electrolytes but I would also find a brand you can add to a thermos with 16 oz. of water that you can take with you during your day - (I use LMNT - comes in flavors and can be found in grocery stores or on Amazon.). Electrolytes are minerals your body needs to function well. And in some locations without knowing it, it is very easy to get dehydrated and not know it until you start having symptoms like constipation. I was in Scottsdale, Arizona at the time when I was sent to the ER.

I have found for me to keep from getting dehydrated, I need to do 5 LR IV of fluids a week and electrolytes drinks like powerade, liquid IV and coconut water. Very little plain water.

I can not drink plain water but I sip all day on liquid IV. I also have severe bowel issues and am chronically dehydrated. Can not get anyone to give me IV fluids. But I do not have a tube. How do you get your IV fluids?

I have a port a cath. I have a home health nurse come see me once a week to put a port needle into the port and I hook up to the IV fluids myself. My GI doctor did the LR IV fluids request. I have a home health agency that has a pharmacy that delivers my IV supplies once a month.

IV fluids help me from getting dehydrated but it doesn't help my other health issues.
