Does this sound like Long Covid?

Posted by sjde53 @sjde53, 6 days ago

For about five years now, my husband has had crushing fatigue, where he’ll wake up refreshed, but then he’ll need a nap an hour or two later and then take a second nap in the afternoon, and still sleep 11 to 12 hours at night. He doesn’t seem to have post exertional malaise. He also had chest pain and shortness of breath. Those last two eventually went away, but were replaced by dizziness and brain fog about two or three years ago. Then about a year ago he developed a slight hand tremor. His PCP referred him to a movement disorders neurologist. The skin biopsy test for Parkinson’s was negative and his hand tremor is not like the usual Parkinson’s tremor. The neurologist never mentioned Long Covid but that’s what I’m starting to think this is.

I only know PD and not long COVID, but it was news to me that there is a skin biopsy test for PD. Neurologists told me PD was determined by observation, and in my case, assisted by a PET scan. Some people have mentioned a DAT scan too, but here is a page that seems pretty official:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/parkinsons-disease/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20376062
I am also not sure what the usual PD tremor is. My point is that I am not saying this is PD and I have no idea what would cause such fatigue (I am not doctor, just someone who has had early onset PD for the last 15 years.) Five years is a long time, but I do know that my PD makes every other malady worse. I also have to treat my asthma, and exercise also helps me feel better. Usually though, PD makes you sleep less, not more. Sorry for your situation.

Sounds similar to what I am going through however all of my symptoms cascaded at once. I have a history of chronic fatigue syndrome from the 1980s which I was able to work through. Ended up with Covid in September 2022. In March ‘26 went through a very traumatic stressful situation and have had shortness of breath, debilitating fatigue, heart palpitations, weight gain, brain fog, and hand tremors. I have been through the gamut of doctors who cannot find a thing wrong. Now I’m thinking it is the combination of CFS/long Covid.

@nova11723 Apparently there is a recently developed skin biopsy test for Parkinson’s and related diseases. https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/skin-test-detects-evidence-parkinsons-related-disorders

@nova11723
Thank you. The skin biopsy test is pretty new and it looks for a misfolded protein - a-synuclein-that is seen in Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementia and MSA. It’s quite accurate , though not 100%. That was done instead of the DaT scan.
The tremor of Parkinson’s is seen at rest, like if your hand is resting on your thigh , but my husband’s is when he holds his arm out , more like an essential tremor ( during action or movement).

Did he see a cardiologist about the chest pain and shortness of breath? That could have been a heart attack. If he didn’t it’s still worth having it checked out now even if it was years ago.
The sleeping issue could be sleep apnea or another sleep disorder. If a sleep specialist rules that out then it could well be Long Covid. LC is diagnosed through a process of elimination — if all your tests are fine but you’re still sick then it’s LC.

@trevors Yes, he actually went to the Mayo clinic and nothing was found.
He’d had a partial collapsed lung( for no apparent reason except he might’ve had Covid). This was before vaccines and tests were available for Covid. So maybe the chest pain and shortness of breath were a lingering result of that?
He does have sleep apnea, but he used a CPAP for a while and now uses the mouth device and it helps.

This all sounds like a Covid symptomology to me. Lots of us have internal tremors and some of us have visual shaking. Shortness of breath, fatigue, exercise malaise, Fluctuations in blood pressure and or blood oxygen, Weight loss or gain, And more. Most of this is due to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system. Best to find a doctor who has experience working with long Covid… Or a doc who can Will call and consult with a long Covid specialist for you

@sjde53 I finally had to go to a concierge doctor or what is called a direct care doc which is very similar. Both charge a monthly fee for care even if you have insurance (usually about $100 to $200 per month) but you have much more time with the doctor and can usually get appointments in a day or two. Some require a 6 month minimum commitment and others just charge month to month...so you can try them out and see if they work without a large monetary outlay. They usually do not charge you for appointments and some of them will do blood draws for free.

All of the ones I have gone to allow you to interview the doctor before you commit to payment and that is when you ask them about their experience with long covid and whether they can consult with other docs about a treatment plan.

Just Google "concierge doctor" or "direct care doctor" with the name of your city to find the ones near you.

It is possible. The symptoms of Long COVID are vast and they mimic other autoimmune illnesses as well as some other health issues. It is frustrating! I can only speak to my experience and some of the research I have read. I am sorry both of you are having to deal with these issues.
