Is 81 year old too old for ablation?

Posted by fdixon63 @fdixon63, 6 days ago

I'm an 81 year old female who had an ablation 11 years ago. Now having problems with being out of rhythm. I am on 200 mg of Amiodorone daily. It helps sometimes but not always. Are there others who are in similar situation--perhaps that did get an ablation? What was your experience following this procedure? Thanks.

@fdixon63 I found him! Dr. Jose Osorio and he has The Afib Clinic in Miami.
Thanks for the recommendation.

I have same irregular heart rythm. Afib.
I wont get Ablation since it doesn't last. I had Cardioversion done only lasted a few month. Not worth it to me to repeatedly do the procedure. Infact, i think its nuts. My Cardiologist both of them said just live with it. I have Afib.23 out of 24 hours a day. Since, now I have low blood pressure now and the heart rhythm is not so noticeable to me. What helped me was GLP1 Foundayo pill. It lowered my high blood pressure in 2 months completely. And stopped BP drugs.I only take .8 mg once a day of Foundayo. Bonus, I lost 10 to 15 lbs. Which was good enough for me.

@9yellowbox - Thanks for your post. I have a couple of questions. What is your age? Have you ever had an ablation? Having A-fib almost the entire day would make me useless--unable to do anything. It just takes all my energy away. Mainly, I'm in arrhythmia and tachycardia daily. It sounds like the weight loss could be your answer. I'm 5'7" and only weigh 114. My weight issue is completely different from yours. Best of luck as you navigate your health.

@cdk43 - That's great to hear. How long did each ablation last?

I had an ablation 2 years ago when I was 78. Have been completely Afib free ever since.

Im 78. Yes, you dont need to loose ten lbs. I wasnt more than 10 lbs excess. So my weight has never been an issue. I heard lots of good things about Foundayo and tried it. It did wonders for my BP. I am not excessively tired. Wont do Ablation because it dosent last. I did cardioversion lasted only few months. Won't keep being put out for short term results. Good luck to you.

I am 78. Won't do Ablation since it doesn't last. Won't put my body through temporarily helping. I am active for my age. Yes, you don't need to loose a lb. I was not heavy but ten lbs I lost is fine. I am on lowest dose to help my heart with Foundayo pill. Won't be loosing any more weight. Good luck

You're not too old for an ablation if your doctor assesses that you're in good health otherwise. The pulsed field ablations that have quickly become the technique of choice in many centers are safer than the older heat-based ablations and probably at least as effective, One caveat, they typically are performed with general anesthesia. Apparently you gad a great experience with your first ablation since it lasted for 11. At the very least, I'd ask your doctor and see what she/he says. Good luck.

@9yellowbox - We each have to make our own decisions regarding our health. As you know there are no guarantee's when it comes to medicine. That's why I love Mayo Connect. We can pose our situation and get the benefit of what others have experienced. I do wish you the very best.
