Diastolic Heart Failure Maintenance

Posted by Arvind Natarajan @malebreastcancer47, Aug 1 7:25pm

A friend’s husband was recently diagnosed with diastolic heart failure. He is 51. on a variety of medication. I have a list of medication he is taking, and planning get him to Mayo for a 2nd opinion on the interaction of the meds.

Does anyone have experience with these medications for the heart and how they interact, will they make someone feel better or worse?

Gabapentin for neuropathy
Carvedilol and spironolactone are for heart failure.
Ritalin for ADHD
Lexapro for anxiety/depression

I am so glad you found the information helpful. When I had conflicting messages from two different cardiologists regarding diastolic dysfunction/heart failure, I knew I needed to find more information. Good luck! My current cardiologist tells me it is very common, as the heart stiffens as we age.

@jc76 I very much appreciate your detailed response. At the moment, I screen shotting replies and sending to my friend.
I have a cousin and husband at Mayo in Rochester, in cardiology. And I am a cancer patient, visit Mayo twice a year for checkups. It was my cousin that suggested Jardiance for my diabetes, not my Northwestern Medicine endo.
Her husband has a cardiologist he likes who is nearby but want to give him a Mayo experience. I am biased. 🙂

I will try to get more information on his case.

Hi, I have HFrEF and I am also a Guillain Beret Syndrome survivor. I have neuropathy issues with my feet as a result of GBS. I took Gabapentin for years, however, I started having memory issues in my 60’s. I read that Gabapentin can cause that. I worked with my PCP to get off the Gab, and I noticed an improvement with my memory within a couple of months. My neuropathy in my feet did not worsen but I still have some problems. I treat it with natural remedies that my Neurologist supports. That’s my experience with Gabapentin.

I spoke with my friend on the topic of neuropathy. Apparently the numbness has started on his hands. He is 51, and they don’t understand what is causing all this.
I don’t know what to tell them on this issue, if the Gabapentin is causing it or all the medications he is taking.
My gut says, all the medications he is taking, possibly causes other issues. I don’t know and my friend is very worried.

I would go on the major medical instutions and research it. What you find bring to your doctors attention.

What I was told by my Mayo Heart Failure doctors was that research was showing that Jardiance was showing promise of helping re-modeling the heart.

If you like I can asked them through Mayo Portal if he has a research site you could go to if you like

I would like to learn more about the natural remedies your Neurologist supports. I have been taking Gabapentin for a little over a year for Restless Leg Syndrome. My sleep study showed 46.8 Periodic Limb Movements/Hour (no wonder I'd been tired for years). However, I, too, am noticing difficulty with my memory since starting. I would like to get off the Gabapentin.
