Does anyone have experience with Mirtazapine?

Posted by faithshouse @faithshouse, Jun 20, 2019

My husband has trouble staying asleep, and falling back to sleep when he awakens during the night. It concerns him, but we wouldn't say that he is depressed. He had heard about Mirtazapine for sleeping. His doctor prescribed 15 mg. Has anyone had side effects, or depression while taking Mirapine? Is it more for depression, than for sleeping? Thanks for your feedback.

Hi I am as prescribed this a few months ago due to insomnia and what my gp called health anxiety. I was loathe to take it and tried a few weeks of 7.5 mg to get sleep. It worked okay but then my anxiety got worse so I went up to 15mg for four weeks. I hate the zombie effect and still felt anxious so started tapering down. I know my gp wants me to stay on it but I don’t like taking medication. I went down to 3.75 this week and then tried two nights without it but not very successfully for sleep.
Does anyone know what tapering is recommended after short term use ? in weeks I mean tos

I have been taking a small amount of Mirtazapine for sleep and it works well for me. But then I am retired and have little stress in my life. I will run out soon and don't expect I will need it then.

@david707 how can you just stop it? Don’t you get withdrawal effects?

I had a horrific experience with Mirtazapine and couldn’t get off it fast enough. Vivid horrible dreams nightly. Didn’t want to go to sleep. Had suicidal thoughts

@hoping25 unfortunately I was not taken seriously by my PCP. I was still on my Zoloft so I just quit the Mirtazapine.
Still on Zoloft years later. The only boost we look at now is going up 25 mg on that.

@gingerbear22 oh okay thanks anyway. I didn’t get it n with Zoloft or ssris but Mirtazipine is just sedation. I want something to lift mood.

@hoping25 15 mg is not very much. Perhaps I am not afraid to quit cold turkey because I take a natural anti anxiety med called F'Anxiety which, surprisingly, has replaced Xanax. I have to admit I also enjoy wine and an occasional Margarita, which probably masks any negative side effects from withdrawal.

I have been on Cymbalta several years but after my wife’s death a year ago I became depressed again and my doctor added mirtazipine as being the best help with least side effects. I am at 15mg at night and it has definitely helped my depression. The appetite boost is unwanted but I try not to overeat. I would not stop until my doctor’s okay and I’m sure it would be a gradual taper. Sleep is rarely a problem for me.

I have been on it for 25 years. Helped me right away.
