Anyone with COPD taking Nucala (mepolizumab)? How did it help?

Posted by snoots @snoots, Dec 15, 2025

I started Nucala a month ago, it’s an injection once a month. Has anyone else taken the monthly shots, how did they help?

@snoots Nucala and Dupixent treat different types of issues from my understanding. This is what I was told Nucala treats:
An eosinophilic phenotype is a visible disease trait defined by high numbers of eosinophils, which are a type of white blood cell that causes swelling and tissue damage. It most often appears in severe respiratory conditions like Eosinophilic Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

@bigbird1956 Thanks. Knew it was for people with high eosinophis. Just wondered if it helped with everyday breathing?

Any side effects you can tell with dupixnent? Tell any difference at all? Mine is talking about Nucala, so I am sure he will try that first. If you change over let me know if you can feel any changes. I really struggle with breathing just walking to bathroom and back. Only about 40 feet, round trip.

@kat1359 I have only been don the day out so it goes away on dupixent. I am at stage 4 From what I understand both shots are to lower exasperations, and stay out of hospital. If it helps with breathing that’s a plus.

@kat1359 Well I think so. Since I received my first shot I have only had to use my rescue inhaler twice. Thank goodness! I have more energy, I can sit for hours without oxygen. I am slowly being able to move around "a little bit" but monitor my O2 VERY close. I'll be going for my 3rd shot in a couple weeks. Hoping for continued progress.

Thanks for responding. How long before you noticed a difference?

@kat1359 I got my first shot on June 18th, by the 23rd I was able to sit and watch tv a lot of the night without oxygen. By the second week I was able to turn my portable oxygen down from 3 to 2 when sitting and still maintain in the mid 90's. Fast forward to now, I still put the portable oxygen on 3 when I am walking, but when I sit down I check O2 and it's usually in the mid to high 90's so I can sit and take it off. But I closely monitor my O2 also. AND I leave the oxygen ON at 1. It takes too long to come back to the level you need if you shut it right off. Hope this helps.

Sounds like it's helping. My main concern was the day to day difference. I haven't had an exererbation in awhile, and I struggle in the heat and humidity. Glad it seems to helping you and continue to get the results you are seeing! Keep me posted on your journey, you've been very helpful 🙂

@kat1359 I got out of the hospital on May 14th from my last exerbation (I've only had two and been hospitalized both times) and I've been keeping a daily journal. The heat doesn't really bother me but the humidity sure does. Just forces me to stay inside more 🙁 Well good luck to you!
