Anybody currently/recently on Carboplatin, Alimpta, Keytruda?

Hi! I’m Toni. I was diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC Adeno in Feb 2018. After 6 years stable and 1 year NED, the cancer has returned. I started Carbo/Alimpta/Keytruda almost two weeks ago. The side effects have been horrific. Last time, I didn’t have Keytruda, and blamed them on the Carbo. I couldn’t do Alimpta maintenance due to toxicity. I’m thinking this may be more due to Alimpta vs Carbo. Anybody? Thanks.

hi @toniparks - welcome to Mayo Connect. sorry to hear you've had recurrence and that you're having to do chemo again. I don't have experience with those meds, but you can find other discussions on here about those. Alimpta is the brand for permetrexed and sometimes you can find more comments by searching on the generic medication names.

This was my most recent treatment which ended a year ago May due to cardiac issues. I am stable after 4 rounds of treatment and 3 maintenance treatments.

Welcome @toniparks , I'm sure it's deflating to be struggling with side effects to this degree. Has your cancer center had suggestions, other than holding treatments? It sounds brutal.

@denzie thank you. Did you have side effects? Did it cause your heart issues? Wonderful in being stable! Thank you!!

@toniparks can't be certain what lead to the heart issues. It can take years for treatment related heart issues to develop. In the past I had radiation on my left lung and a few years later for a left side breast cancer.

Neither my cardiologist or my oncologist could say with any degree of certainty that it was the carbo, Alimta, or keytruda. It could be none of the above or all of the above. I'm planning to consult with a cardio-oncologist when or if I need treatment again.
