MGUS and Epstein-Barr virus
I was diagnosed with MGUS earlier this year. It is at the initial/asymptomatic stage. Bone marrow biopsy was negative for cancer. My oncologist will be rechecking my labs in 6 months.
Question: I recently stumbled on information that there's a connection between Epstein-Barr virus and MGUS. I had mono years ago so I guess I have latent EBV.
Does anyone know more about this connection between EBV and MGUS? I don't need any links as I've already read the information online. I'm merely interested in whether anyone has discussed this with their oncologist.
Does anyone know if antivirals would help prevent MGUS from evolving into SMM?

I was very interested in your question. I also stumbled on to some vague association mentions between EBV and MM, but no real helpful information, but I have a similar very old situation. Did mention to my Hematologist, but no response. Had unusual lengthy and severe case of mono 65 years ago and many unsolved health issues in the years following, until I had an active Epstein Barr Virus titer confirm the cause in 1989. It was a new test to my doctor and only discovered after he had a new patient from Los Angeles move to our small rural area of the Midwest and my Doctor was able to learn info from the new patients doctors! Learned to manage recurring episodes. Then 2005 MGUS diagnosis. Monitored until 2025 and SMM. After more testing now in treatment for MM and Amyloidosis. Thankful for all the mostly good years I had without progression. I do hope you will also have a slow progression.

I have the same question--does having mononucleosis in the past predispose someone to MGUS?
I had mononucleosis about 50 yrs ago (confirmed by testing).
I did read that a majority of people have been exposed to EBV. If so, then I guess it's logical that a subset of people with MGUS will also have latent EBV. In other words, maybe it's nothing unusual.
