B-6 vitamin danger!

Posted by Lynsorensen @lynsorensen, Dec 11, 2017

With the assistance of a neurologist at Mayo Clinic, I have almost completely eliminated the uncontrolled muscle spasms now. First and foremost: beware of taking multi-vitamin capsules that have B6 listed. B-6 overdosage (which is contained in every multivitamin I found in stores and on the internet) can cause loss of muscle control and spasms in some people. So can gluten found in many foods so now I am also gluten free. I now work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week and do water aerobics another 2 days. Got off gabapentin and also clonazepam. Using CBD oil capsules each morning (no more opioids or chemicals) and using a CBD topical ointment to rub on my leg muscles each night. He says I don't need him anymore! And I don't. No more shaking or muscle cramps or pain. Still a little numbness but that is receding also.

I'm new to the group already. I am very impressed with some of the comments I really would love some direction. My levels were recently discovered about six weeks ago at 330 with vitamin B6 toxicity. Can someone please help give me good ideas? Of course. I've cut out all electrolyte drinks. I think that's what was causing it. In addition to my vitamin multivitamin, please help me and give me suggestions. I would really appreciate it. Thank you so very much.

My story is similar except using vicks instead of cbd oil.
Lost weight, exercise, lift weights, swim in gym, use spa and sauna, take vitamins, sleep better, beating neuropathy. No cane, no walker, balance is better. I can even dance!!! 73 years old.

Good morning…Thank you so much for your comments. I’m sorry you were also diagnosed. Was your diagnosis an elevated B6 or neuropathy? I was a very healthy woman until neuropathy diagnosis. I eliminated anything with B6 after discovering my high levels. Unfortunately my peripheral neuropathy continues. While on medication for it, I’ve also incorporated a vibration plate into my fitness routine. Not sure if I’ve seen huge results yet but will continue. Please let me know how you are doing.

@patrice9 There is another discussion that you might find helpful for learning what others have shared - High Vitamin B6: How can I lower it?: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/high-vitamin-b6/.

I think stopping all of the high energy or electrolyte drinks that contain B6 is the first step which you mentioned you are already doing. Drinking a lot of water also helps the body remove the excess B6.

I am commenting for my husband who suffers from neuropathy. He takes vitamin that has 2900% of recommended daily dose B6. My question for you is how long did it take for you to get the B6 out of your system and see some improvement?

@ctiernan09 does your husband know that neuropathy is due to demyelination of nerves. Vitamin B12 makes myelin. Only source is animal protein. Seniors eat too little of. Best sources are liver and mussels. Otherwise take the supplement METHYLCOBALAMIN. Coba stands for cobalt. Soil mineral. That's where B12 is made. Used to be abundant in river water. But now city water treatment has removed it. You can see why country folk are healthier.

Hi all, I’m new to the group and hope to find some answers. I was diagnosed in January with high levels of vitamin B6, per the lab sheet normal is 5.3 – 46.7 ug/L and I was at 93. I had been having burning sensations/pain on my hands, feet, face and sporadically on other areas for quite a while. I visited several doctors and finally ended up at an allergist office (he’s the first one to think to test for B6). He felt the B6 was causing peripheral neuropathy. His advice was to stop taking all vitamin supplements and protein shakes and retest in 3 weeks. I spent the last month drinking 90 oz of water per day and really trying to limit my B6 intake. Fast-forward to last week and the blood work came back with normal B6 levels, 22 ug/L. I guess the questions at this point are; how long does it take for the symptoms to resolve and what follow up should I be doing?

@nydiver59 it’s almost 8 years now since you stopped taking B6, have your neuropathy symptoms gone away? I also had elevated B6 levels and it is now normal but haven’t seen any difference in symptoms. Wonder how long it takes.
