Reclast infusion long term side effects
Hello,
I’m new to this forum.
I had a Reclast Infusion in May 2025. After a year dealing with knee pain issues my Dexa Scan results were terrible.
My endocrinologist had already suggested I’d need it, after doing some research I refused it for about 5 years.
Since the infusion, I’ve had digestive problems and pain on my left ribs. Strangely, on the first 24 hours after the infusion this is the exact place where I had intense sharp pain. It’s mostly during the night and in the morning.
Anyone experiencing the same?
Thank you!

My side effects were zero after my second Reclast last October! Bad 2 weeks after first but I insisted doctor order 45 min drip and I took pre infusion Tylenol for 2 days prior. I was shocked at the minimal problems after some bad ones the first infusion!

Thank you for the great advice!
I will definitely be asking for a longer infusion time too.
Great help!

2 Reactions@fjeldbar how were your results after your first infusion?!
My first infusion was bad. I was in bed two days (Which is very unusual for me, even when ill or after a surgery, I never stay still as a rule) with horrible hip ache and nausea, chills and night sweats (I am way past menopause). I took the Tylenol as directed, which had NO effect on me, so then took Aleve and Tramadol, which I use for low back issues about twice a year. I felt like I had hair loss through the year, not huge, and maybe it was my body clock shedding as does happen? I was also extremely tired, but still exercised after a couple weeks. I generally just felt off. I was about to decline a second Reclast treatment when I got my DEXA scan telling me my hip numbers were better and I was now in one aspect of osteopenia instead of osteoporosis mode!
I really had to balance whether these problems were because of Reclast or the fact that I was now 70, prediabetic, and have MGUS... and with age comes various problems. I generally am in good everyday health and have a good exercise schedule, good weight, no extremely bad habits (Sugar!), so these bumps in the road were not usual for me.

2 ReactionsHope you are feeling better in a couple weeks. Side effects from My 1st and last ReClast lasted months. Very tired, depressed and body aches for at least 10 months. There was no way I was going to have a second infusion and start that over again. The symptoms I had were blamed on other things. Doctors don’t want to admit the side effects last longer that a couple weeks. The asked “Were you hydrated and did you take Tylenol before infusion”? Yes i did but symptoms shouldn’t last 9 months. Not again.

6 ReactionsReclast infusion landed me in the hospital as he drug caused Giant Cell Arteritis. I have permanent partial vision loss. There are ongoing studies linking Reclast to Arteritis. Never again

9 Reactions@serahjane I'm curious how you are feeling now and whether the weakness in your legs and the bone pain have resolved since you posted this in February. I had my first Reclast injection in February and I've never felt worse. Like you, my legs feel so weak and I have severe bone pain. I've also developed sciatica which may be because my spine is so compressed. I have a T score of -4.1 in my spine and was talked into Reclast after failing both Prolia and Fosomax. Severe bone pain with Prolia as well but was told it was rare with Reclast. I am done with these injections. I was feeling fine until I started these treatments. I hiked, biked, rode my horse and was good until I was told my T scores were so low I needed a "fix." I am 66 and I've never had a fracture. My life has been hell ever since the Prolia and Reclast injections. I keep praying these side effects will wear off at some point. I hope yours have!

5 ReactionsCarole59, it is probably a good thing to wait those horseriding and biking activities until your lumbar spin is stronger. I'd wish you started with an anabolic drug, but once you were on Prolia the Reclast sequence was unavoidable.
When February rolls 27 around you might ask about Forteo or Tymlos.
Are you using bone markers?

2 ReactionsOh, some people get relief from a short course of steroid. But they aren't the best for our bones.
@carole59
I didn't have any joint luckily. The pain was from the neck up, mainly the head. I was diagnosed in early April so all of this is new to me. Now weaning from prednisone. I actually feel quite well.
