Years after prostate surgery: Is it okay to eat steak once a month?
Can someone who has been years post RALP without BCR please share if they have a steak once in awhile ? Would it be ok to eat a steak once or twice a month if that is the only red meat consumed?

I am here the "big bad witch" that scares people and is forcing them to adhere to healthy eating 🧙♀️ lol, but even I will tell you that once or twice a month one medium portion of any red meat should be OK.
Just make sure it is ORGANIC ! And if possible trim all fat away since the most toxins are there (in general).
And, of course, make sure that 2 times a month does not become once a week and than every day, eventually ; ).
All of this is just my personal opinion, no science behind safety of eating beef twice a month - but just by pure logic it should not have tremendous effect. What is the worst is actually preserved meat - please do not consume any dried or preserved meats no matter if it is turkey or beef.
Wishing you all the best 🍀 : )))
PS: Forgot to say, all that I wrote applies if red meat is your only "sin" ; ) , meaning that you take care and follow other recommended restrictions on milk, eggs , processed food etc. and stick otherwise with veggie and fruit dominant meals.

3 ReactionsOh, you've hit the "You can't have nice things anymore" stage.
I had "No spicy foods & no coffee".
What? But they're my 2 main food groups.
I ignored them & I'm still alive.
Just try a small bit & see how you go.
Everyone's different & it may be a guideline.

4 ReactionsI was never told I couldn't eat a steak or red meat. Well for the first few weeks I wasn't, but after that was not given a diet.

2 ReactionsI had a prostatectomy 16 years ago. It came back 3 1/2 years later and I had radiation. Its come back three times since then. I’ve been on Orgovyx and Nubeqa For three years and I’ve been undetected the last 32 months.
I’ve been to a steakhouse I really like twice in the last 9 months and I’m going again next month. I’ve had small pieces of steak just an ounce or two a couple of times in that year.
Not eating red meat at all is not a necessity just don’t eat it very often. Once a month is not going to be a real issue.

There are many dietary guidelines for prostate cancer patients and you can easily find them Googling or going through posts here on this forum.

2 ReactionsI’m meeting with a registered dietitian who specializes in nutrition for cancer patients, so I’ll report back on what they say.
The dietitian is provided as part of the cancer center’s survivorship program. During my last PSA follow-up, I’d asked the NP a food-related question, and she offered to set me up with one of their dietitians for a consult.
I did get a booklet from PCF or some such organization a while back, and yeah, it really does seem like it’s:
1. Make a list of all the things you love to eat.
2. Don’t eat any of those things.
My weaknesses…eggs and cured meats/deli meats. I’ve cut way back, but to go without entirely is out of the question, for me anyway.

6 ReactionsOf course we all want to live longer especially after going through all the harsh treatments. No one once to go through more treatments if the PC returns. Will eating only good foods accomplish that? Perhaps, but there is no proof of it preventing recurrence. Of course it will help to eat healthy organic foods. But I don't think we should give up all enjoyments in life. Then no matter how long you live what quality of life is it. I've always been a believer "everything in moderation". Not sure how or why I got PC since no one in my family has / had PC or breast cancer. Or any cancer for that matter. I can't only blame it on the foods I ate. Anyway I don't think enjoying a steak or a cocktail / beer. Or anything you enjoy for that matter "once in awhile" is going to change your PC.

11 ReactionsUCSF has some great resources on diet and lifestyle (e.g., exercise) recommendations for prostate cancer patients:
https://urology.ucsf.edu/lifestyle/resources
You can also find a summary of their dietary guidelines here:
https://www.ucsfhealth.org/health-articles/nutrition-and-prostate-cancer
I agree with the others here that limited consumption of the problematic foods like red meat are unlikely to become an issue if you maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle overall and take the "limited" part seriously.

4 ReactionsI make no apologies for being the top of the food chain and humans did not get there by eating leaves. A steak every now and then isn't going to kill you (unless you choke on it 😁). Moderation is key (I think somebody said that once or twice).
