What supplementals actually work for osteopenia?

I have been in osteopenia for a long time and no doctor of mine has ever addressed it. I guess they were waiting for full blown osteoporosis. What REALLY helps? I take Vitamin D3 with K2 but no extra calcium. I understand weight bearing exercises help the most.

What helps a lot is proper weight-bearing exercise. The more load you put on the bones, the stronger they get. You can research the LIFTMOR program. You can also look at Dr. Lisa Moore's YouTube channel - she is the "queen" of osteoporosis exercises.

@lovesummer Sorry to hear that. You don't need to lift weights, though. There are some body weight exercises you can do at home. Some are very simple.

@njx58 I have ongoing Gluteal Tendinopathy also which makes it hard for certain exercises. Load bearing for tendons but slowly and holding longer like isometrics. I am trying to use weights right now but those also bother my tendons after exercising. Looking into HRT for the tendon pain so I can actually exercise. Agree that exercise seems to be the number one puzzle piece.

I have osteopenia my Dr wants to prescribe me with Denosumab injections every six months. I am hesitant to start the injections. I have dental implants. I also have had osteomyelitis of my right lower leg with a skin craft. About a year ago my wound fron my skin craft opened up I couldn't get it closed until last February.
I have my doubts about starting this medication. My husband and I also spend our winters in Florida.

@boneless1234 Osteopenia only, not osteoporosis? Have you ever had a fracture from a non-high/low impact fall? Do you have a high FRAX fracture risk on your DEXA? Is your doctor an osteoporosis expert who is an endocrinologist? If not, can you get a referral to one? Not clear why your doctor would not start you on an oral bisphosphonate before considering Prolia. Note that if you ever start Prolia, you can never miss an injection on time or stop it without a planned transition to a bisphosphate or you risk a rebound (to worse) and spontaneous compressions. Are you 10 or more years past menopause? If not, HRT (hormone treatment) should also be investigated as an option to help mitigate bone loss.

Interesting and relevant question to ask and almost impossible to determine. I struggle with the concept...let me explain. One gets diagnosed with osteoporosis. Next steps....supplements, diet changes, weight and balance exercises, bone building medication. You do them all....next DEXA scan....improvement (or none). Back to the question...which step resulted in the improvement. More questions...could I improve by just supplements?...supplements and exercise???... a different combination? For me...I can't seem to do any of them consistently so I'm probably doomed!
