Increase/decrease of phlegm with Brinsupri

Posted by turtlegals @turtlegals, Jul 14 8:38am

I have been taking Brinsupri for about 6 months and initially, had a decrease in phlegm . At this time however, I am noticing a gradual increase in the amount of phlegm I am producing. Wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

Yes, I also noticed an increase for a bit. It seems that things kept changing, and I am now at almost 10 months and sputum has stabilized in quantity -- for now. Keep in mind that sputum amounts change daily anyway, with or without Brinsupri. Just like sleep can be different every night. Many variables involved. Brinsupri has reduced the amount of gunk I get out by about by 1/3. I still have/feel the need for airway clearance. The biggest difference I have felt so far is less coughing all around, and increased energy. Makes sense since frequent coughing takes a lot out of the body. The real tell will be after the 1 year mark, as the clinical trials only ran for 1 year. Will we keep getting better? Time will tell.

I also produce more sputum regularly on Brinsupri 25 mg after almost 6 months - but I have good energy. I use my nebulizer every 1-2 days as needed. Almost immediately I stopped regularly coughing up blood/small clots. My next Pulmonary Function Test is in 6 weeks, the results of which will be interesting when compared to 1 year ago.

Yes I have noticed an increase lately of sputum. I'm in my 4th month. I wasn't sure whether it was Brinsupri or airway irritants that have caused it. We've had very hot humid weather with moderate air quality. Plus I was exposed to some perfume that lingered in a room of my house. And when I first started B I was finishing an antibiotic for a flare up so I may have had less mucus from that which has gradually returned. In other words I'm not sure of the cause.

My mucus diminished in the first 3 months, but now has increased to similar levels as before Brinsupri. I cough less during the day, but have more choke-cough episodes (dry throat with drainage). I have some hair loss and itchy spots that started at 4 months, and overall have dryer skin. The heat here in CO isnt helping!. I will see my NJH doctor in August and evaluate further steps.

I am month9 and I cough more than before but often these are the choke cough episodes with very dry mouth and throat. Recent two months I am using cough drops very often- throat so dry.

I am finishing up my 9th month. I cough less and have more energy. My skin is dry and I am using lots of skin cream. Definitely less Sputum but I am continuing lung clearance 2 x a day but sometimes when life gets hectic I can skip the morning session with the saline nebulizer and just use the Arobika. I have more sputum if my allergies set in but usually an antihistamine can shut that down. I sometimes have a dry coughing fit with cold drinks, exercise or excessive talking or laughing.

@lilianna I'm on my 9th month of brinsupri. I rarely cough and have a lot less sputum production. If I begin coughing or increased sputum, I contact my pulmonologist. They order a sputum which usually shows I'm having a flareup and start antibiotics.

I am finishing my 9th month on brensocatib (Brinsupri). Because I am a retired nurse and appreciate objective data I used to measure my sputum every couple of weeks. For two years prior to starting Brinsupri I averaged 100 to 150cc per day. I used a beaker I bought on Amazon that I love by the way for accuracy. One ounce is 30cc so at times I was coughing up to 5 ounces of thick tan sputum per day. Today, my beaker is basically useless, I barely cough a tablespoon (15cc) per day. It has been a miracle drug for me. I have osteoporosis and severe osteoarthritis so walking is important and it used to be a struggle coughing up so much every block. I will say I have had some hair loss but I am also on osteoporosis medication and thus it is very tough to say which drug is the culprit on that front. I sure hope this all continues to be positive for all of us experiencing good results so far.

I am going on a plane to see my grandkids in August. It will be the first time in two years I am traveling by plane. I never thought it was possible till now. I actually feel more in control of my Bronchiectasis on Brinsupri.

Interested to know if you don't mind sharing, which medication are you taking for osteoporosis?
I have been told I need to start taking one due to a combination of my osteopenia and Frax score result.

Wow, that's just great! I am feeling relief too. It's reduced in quantity, color, and viscosity. You nailed it by describing having more control over the BE, instead it controlling you! I keep thinking I have stabilized and then it seems every day there's a bit less gunk. Continued improvement? All this reduction has to be good for my lungs, a break from constant inflammation. Is this a step towards healing?! I still nebulize 2x day, but little productivity in p.m. I do wake up during sleep coughing sometimes which is annoying.

Have a great visit with the grands!
