Gosh that is most interesting. I am always reading and researching. I am lucky that the ID and Respiratory consultants that I see are superb. I will go armed with a new set of questions. My main aim is to avoid taking antibiotics. I want to keep working - it is a job I love and at almost 60 I am not ready to retire just yet! It gives me a sense of purpose and it is great for my mental wellbeing. Thank you for getting in touch.

I HAD a 3 cm Cavitary mass from a newly diagnosed NTM infection .
I presented with no symptoms at all and it just showed up as an incidental finding on chest x-ray.I was treated with 5 antibiotics ( one I.V through a PIC line ..that I was only able to tolerate a week .I had contacted a fantastic thoracic surgeon here at NYU ( Dr Robert Cerfolio)who robotically removed my mass !
My 3 month post surgery C.T was negative and I remain asymptomatic!

I never said that my biopsy was negative ??,obviously they were positive for a bacteria that is classified in the MAC family ,but not a common one ).
The choice given to me was to take 2 years of multiple antibiotics ( which I couldn’t even do for even a week ) or if I refused treatment ,I would not have long to live .
I did a lot of research and found that surgery for cavitary masses was an option, and that the antibiotics would have never penetrated the wall of the Cavitary mass . Perhaps a last option for some ,but for me and my quality of the life ….the only one .
It was not a difficult surgery with new robotic lung resections .All of my 3 cm was removed along with surrounding nodes to prevent seeding …..my 3 moth CT was clear and I never had,and still don’t have symptoms.
I hope that clarifies everything!!!

@visions63 What a great outcome.
It just goes to show you/us that we do have to do our research and inquiry...and then....go with what WE feel is best for ourselves.
Personally in almost everything, if not everything, if a mistake is going to be made I would rather make the mistake than the doctor, or whoever, because it is more disturbing and bothersome when someone else makes the mistake that affects us.
No mistake here for you....wonderful story.
