Cervical epidural scheduled. Your experiences?

Posted by chanduk @chanduk, 3 days ago

Hello all,
I am scheduled to get a cervical epidural I two weeks. I am really scared. Can you share your experience with this procedure, if you had it. Also, appreciate any tips to get through this. They will try this before exploring surgical options. I am in excruciating pain in my neck radiating down my arm to the fingers. Many times I feel like an electrical shock running through my arm. Any help, suggestions is greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Never had nor needed one. Did pass go and go direct to fusion. Neck is fine now.

Cervical epidural was good for me- had it done June 10 and was told to allow 10 days or so for results. It did not take away all pain but about 50%. No need to worry yourself- Try some deep breathing (slow and steady) during it.
If you have not had an MRI it is such a good option. And you will find out so many answers from that. My PCP ordered mine after PT and chiro did not help. Good luck!

I have the exact same problem and symptoms for 2 1/2 years. I’m doing the injections, in the beginning it was every 6-8 months. No pain no side affects and it helps. But now i need it every couple months and insurance will only allow 4 per year. I’ll pay cash for extra 500$. I use Tylenol and ice packs on my neck most days.

I’ve had cervical injections and ablations with sedation and without. I prefer cervical procedures with light sedation (feyanyl and versed) as I am fearful of moving while the needles near my spine. As far as lumbar, my preference is light sedation, but that’s alll about my comfort and preference. I’ve had it without as well and it was tolerable, but a totally different experience

I have had quite a few injections. No need to be scared, they are not bad. Its a little weird feeling but if it helps you'll be happy. Follow what the Dr says and don't push too hard if it feels good. A few of mine were helping before I made it out of the Dr's office.

I had very large herniated disc but I forget which vertebrae in cervical spine. The pain was so bad I could not even ride in a car let alone drive. I literally thought about throwing myself in the river close by ! I had the epidural by a young doctor and let me tell you, it was like magic! The pain greatly improved and then shortly was gone! I will always love that young woman. So that is just my experience but with pain that bad, I, who am generally wary of procedures, did not hesitate. I am glad I had it done.

I had a cervical epidural 4 weeks ago. It was not a big deal at all. I had no extra soreness after the injection. Unfortunately it did not help my severe cervical stenosis at all. The only thing it helped was shoulder pain in my right shoulder and upper arm, thereby confirming that the stenosis in my neck is causing my continuing shoulder pain. I have scheduled a cervical nerve ablation (rhizotomy) for 3 weeks from now. I have had the nerve ablation done a number of times in the past and it always gives me temporary relief from my neck pain and the headaches that are caused by my cervical stenosis. The nerve ablation will give me some time to work with my spine surgeon on what needs to be done for my neck. He has already stated that it is going to need surgery. I don't know yet how extensive it will be. I have a new cervical MRI scheduled for next week and an appointment to discuss the findings with my spine surgeon next month. I am scared of the cervical surgery but my surgeon did my lumbar spine laminectomy and fusion 3 months ago and I am doing great in that area. Good luck on your cervical steroid injection. Try to relax, it will make it easier.
