Anyone had radiation for recurrent meningioma?
Hi all,
I had a craniotomy 12 years ago at Mayo Jax for meningioma (sphenoid wing pressing left optic nerve). Post-op ocular stroke resulting in left eye blindness. Meningioma is back in same spot, surgery would do more harm than good, too risky. Considering radiation. Afraid of potential radiation damage to my one and only seeing eye and optic nerve (right eye, right optic nerve). Could anyone share radiation experience for recurrent meningioma? Please and thank you so much!
Debra

@vernicek: That is what the radiation oncologist suggested with regard to my meningioma that was near my optic nerve, 5 days a week (Mon-Fri.) for 6 weeks.
@mkoch
Is it called IMRT? (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) Was risk to your optic nerve mentioned/discussed?
@dbarn68: The neurologist I consulted sent me to the radiation oncologist telling me my meningioma, 1/16th of an inch from my optic nerve, was inoperable. I don't remember the radiation oncologist specifically referencing IMRT. What I do remember is that he said he had some concerns about doing radiation so close to my optic nerve and he was going to consult a neurosurgeon at UCSF that he knew. Coincidentally, that same day, my daughter insisted that I was only going to Dept. of Neurosurgery at UCSF and not limit myself to our local neurosurgery dept. She was correct. It was worth the 90 minute drive to San Francisco. The neurosurgeon there said he could remove the meningioma. That was 2 and 1/2 years ago and I'm doing well. Hope you can get your questions answered and select the treatment that is best for your situation.
