Failed ACDF Surgery
I had acdf surgery of c4 thru c7 two and 1/2 years ago. They won’t say it was a failed surgery because the hardware is still in place makes no sense). I’ve been in constant pain ever since. I’ve had steroid injections with absolutely no relief. I’ve had massages once a month and pt also. My left shoulder blade area (rhomboid and traps) are in unbearable pain. I’ve cried more than once at appointments because I guess they have no idea. I take 4 and sometimes 5 10mg oxycodone daily and would take more but then I’d run out. Is anyone else out there in so much pain they feel like giving up?

1 ReactionI had acdf surgery done October 28 and I’m in so much pain I had it done on c5-c6. I have terrible shoulder pain my hands tingle and my feet go numb and burn I have bad migraines and neck pain and they won’t prescribe nothing but gabapentin for pain that doesn’t help. It’s very hard to live in daily and constant pain I’m 33 and have degenerative disc diease scattered arthritis and spinal stenosis and scoliosis and nerve damage. I got my nerves burned in my neck made my pain worse then I got epidural steroid injection helped the pain a little over a month and then decided to do surgery I wish I didn’t do it but when your so desperate for pain relief you will do anything reason for surgery was I had a slipped disc and a pinched nerve and he said I had bone spurs he took at as well I totally understand what your going through everyday is miserable and the doctors do not listen or care. I’m sorry you are going through what you are I truly hope your pain stops and never comes back
I had a failed cervical spine fusion surgery in 2021 I have been on 20mg oxycodone 4x a day 20mg Baclofen 4x a day and Lyrica 2x a day 200mg and I'm still in pain,I don't understand what the benefit was in doing this surgery on me and I'm 100% worse than before the surgery, make it make sense 🤷🏾♀️ because it doesn't, I'm in the process of filing a report against the surgeon that did my surgery because he didn't let me know that he damaged my cranial,it took a surgeon in California to tell me that I was messed up and I live in Colorado 🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ this type of surgery should be banned to perform on humans (.)

May I ask which doctor you saw in California? I also live in California and I am living in so much pain from an ACDF surgery of many years ago. It has caused adjacent segment disease above the fusion of the C 4/C5. I also have much pain at the C7 T1 area C8 nerve showing Radiculopathy there. .A local neurosurgeon said he could do a micro dissection for me at the c4/5 area for the severe Canal narrowing but I think I need this hardware out or maybe just the bottom portion of it shaved down if that is possible. I have so much pain affecting my quality of life. Don’t know where to begin to look for a surgeon that can address this.

@mariann0007 I fell 6 months after having major lumbar surgery for spinal stenosis causing a compression fracture adjacent to the operated section. The pain was quickly excruciating to the point that I heavily increased my normal oxycodone dosage-all to no avail. Realizing this was not very smart (I was desperate) I called an ambulance and went to the ER. The EMT said my pupils "looked like dots" and put me on oxygen en route. In the ER they infused me with some of the drugs they use in the surgery "cocktail" according to the attending nurse. The effect was immediate and wonderful-it felt like a terrible weight had been lifted. I was there over night for observation, but that terrible pain never returned and the pain that remained was controlled by oral narcotics until healing made them no longer needed. What I am saying is that that type of pain can be more deleterious then the original problem and unless dealt properly with greatly reduces or even makes impossible any progress. With me and some others I have discussed this with once that cycle of pain is stopped, even temporarily, it seems to have a tendency to diminish to the point of being successfully treated by more conventional dosing. This is all empirical-just my experience-but that is how it has worked for me. Maybe something to think about

1 Reaction@rockon79 Thank you. I am trying to get help and have been for many years after my ACDF surgery of 2014 not showing that it has given me adjacent segment disease. I also had a laparoscopic female surgery 2021 and the surgeon accidentally cut my transverse colon upon placement. I have many painful adhesions abdominal and pelvic from the surgery. Difficult to have any pain relief. It hurts my neck to lay down it hurts everything else to sit up.
@mariann0007 I really think there are too many medical professionals that simply do not properly comprehend how debilitating severe chronic pain can be both mentally and physically. Many do not fully realize pain of that category can impede if not stop any medical improvement and should strongly feel the moral obligation to help a fellow human's suffering-especially in their position. Please, never forget-that in todays advanced medical society most pain can be treated and or controlled for at least a marginal life style with a noticeable respite from some of the agony. That ideal involves finding the right provider with the right knowledge with the right mind set. I had to look but persistence paid off finding a professional that provided the guidance I needed. I am sure that must be available to you also. I have a great empathy for your situation for I have been there (more than once).
