Pain in leg muscles, tendons, and knees after Bilateral PE on Eliquis

Posted by smasneri @smasneri, Jul 6, 2023

One month after massive bilateral PE and taking 5 mg twice daily. Experiencing constant and continual pain in legs, mainly behind both knees, in tendons, and some muscle flare ups. Have had two ultrasounds and a CT scan on both legs since I was diagnosed June 6 and they are negative. My D Diemer is .43 and all vitals strong and regular. Echocardiogram shows no strain on heart. We have ruled most everything else out. No trauma to legs, no cuts, bruises or strains. Is this related to the Eliquis? My local hematologist wants me on it for another 5 months, I won’t be able to make that unless this subsides. Anyone else out there having this issue? Recommendations?

Tried compression socks? Also having a good pair of shoes like Hoka’s will help. Elevation along with Tylenol has been helping me.

Competitive cyclist for over 30 years years, had a slight mishap 11 years ago at a training race and developed a small blood clot in my left leg. Was on Xarelto for six months, after the six months did another sonogram and the clot was clear so I was taken off Xarelto and put on baby aspirin.
11 years later I developed another one behind my knee. Being 64 years old and still very active I had no idea how this developed this other than “over training.“ during the winter.
Now on Eliquis 5 mg twice a day and feel absolutely horrible. The pain I am experiencing in my leg, shoulder, wrist and knee is borderline unbearable. I try not to take Tylenol too much as I value my kidneys. My blood work and cardiac testing are 100%, no issues at all.
Not sure if I want to stay on Eliquis at all due to the side effects.
Looking for a sensible answer as I do not trust the doctors anymore.

I’m wondering why they put you on Eliquis when you had mentioned the first blood clot you had you were on Xarelto and it cleared…

I've been on Eliquis for 3 months for a DVT, and since then I've developed constant pain bilaterally in my hips, knees and hands. Nothing helps. I've had CTs, MRIs, Xrays, even a Nuc Med Scan. They can't find anything to explain the pain.

Your comment are very interesting. Since starting Eliquis I have developed significant joint pain with the worst being hands/wrists and neck plus feeling ‘off’ in the mornings in particular. As the day goes on I get better but still have pain. The marker for inflammation also has gone way up along with my WBC. Haven’t yet spoken with PCP and cardiologist about it but will be soon. I dint feel like working out and I know I could not lift weights of any weight so getting weaker.

@edv I've been on Eliquis for 3 months and I've delveloped bilateral hip, knee and hand pain. Nothing helps. I've had all kinds of imaging and they can't find anything wrong. I had some elevated inflammatory markers, but the rheumatologist said I do not have RA, lupus or anything else.
