Does anyone have any experience with Baló Concentric Sclerosis?

My best friend was just diagnosed with this rare disease and we’re having a hard time understanding what it means and what we should expect. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi @dclove - Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Baló Concentric Sclerosis is indeed a rare disease. You are a good friend to be seeking to get information on this disease and understand what to expect.

Articles I thought were helpful related to Baló Concentric Sclerosis are:

- Balo Disease https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/balo-disease/

- Balo Concentric Sclerosis: A Rare Variant of Multiple Sclerosis With Excellent Response to Early Steroid Treatment https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12262001/

What symptoms led your friend to seek medical help?

Thank you, Lisa.

I will go to the sites. I appreciate the resources.

The symptoms that led my friend to seek attention were a weakness in his left arm, balance issues, and overall decreased coordination.
He fell a couple of times, dropped things that were in his hand and “played volleyball like an 8th grader with trouble getting the serve over the net” (his words)
His doctor was reluctant to escalate testing thinking that the body would recover on its own and later thinking that my friend may have suffered a minor stroke, but once the MRI came back, seems pretty certain that it’s this very rare condition given the onion shape of the lesion(s).
