Gabapentin 800mg x 3 day

Anyone with neuropathy in booth feet and severe foot and leg cramps been prescribed Gabapentin 800mg x 3 day. I saw an orthopedic surgeon and she advised surgery would not be beneficial and prescribed me gabapentin and a compound pain cream which I get next week. I am concerned as I read side effects at this dosage commonly also causes memory, cognitive and balance function issues. I am really hesitant to start this high dosage. I am 78yr woman very active, an artist and author, even with both knees and hips replaced, and want to continue enjoying life.

Bluntly. Gabapentin sucks. It is recognized in recovery communities as an addictive medication. And they are not wrong.

I was on gabapentin for 4 years or so, ending around 2017. It was originally prescribed for sleep, then increased in dose and frequency over time for anxiety.

What it took me a while to realize is that gabapentin was causing a lot of the anxiety.

Gabapentin clears my system very quickly and I started noticing my anxiety was through the roof when it was time for my next dose. I think I ended on 600 mg 3X.

I was taking a medication for sleep and anxiety that was causing debilitating mini panic attacks. It was affecting my ability to leave the house and drive anywhere.

I'm not on any psych meds now, with good reason. But I would still say there are some that - while I wouldn't wish the withdrawal from them on anyone - do not immediately adversely affect one's quality of life so drastically.

Cymbalta is also used for pain relief and doesn't make one feel like a junkie. Based solely on my experience, of course, but others seem to agree.

Your instincts are serving you well. Keep questioning until you find a healthy, medically supported solution for you.

No no don’t do it. The withdrawal from it can end you in the hospital with dehydration, vomiting, etc. It is just like an addict going through it but then add your age. It will affect your whole system. Just went through it with a friend.
Yes, it hurt and you want relief. Find another way.

have you tried B12 and lipoic acid and pot cream on effected areas, are more hopeful natural ways.

My husband was on the same dosage for the same condition. After a few months he suddenly had rapid onset of dementia. It scared me to death. I thought maybe he was having strokes, so took him to ER where they tested everything and all images scanned. Bottom line: high dose gaba. After dosing down and stopping, he was back to normal in a week. I stopped taking it too.

I assume any one can have a different reaction to Gabapentin.

I was prescribed 300mg at night for leg cramps and neuropathy. It worked very well and I had no noticeable side effects. After a year on this med, my doctor said get off it slowly over the next couple weeks and see what happens. I no longer take this med but I do use a muscle relaxer to keep the leg cramps in check.

@peter51f Thank you. My dosage prescribed is 800mg x 3 per 24hrs. Neuropathy is in both feet. Been told surgery is too dangerous for me. Bone fusion would lead to fractures, wheelchair bound and possible amputation. My weight is average to low and not an issue but I have had both TKRs and both hips replaced in last 4 years. Have you any knowledge of any symptoms for this dosage?

Keep in mind that most meds have side effects.

Research and ask questions of your provider before starting medications for whatever reason the reason you have the prescription for (ask if there are other options available too.) Ask your provider if they would use the med if they were you.

Sometimes it is best to start with the smallest dose possible and gradually increase as needed. This is referred to as minimal effective dose. Dose changes should be directed by your provider. (Children and older folks often respond best to smaller doses.)

Be aware that if you have other conditions and use medications for those, drug interactions can occur. Again, your provider (who knows your history) should help work out the various aspects of your treatment plan to find what is in your best interests.

I agree. Stepped myself off Gabapentin once I read a not so shared credible sourced drug trial on it where patients were losing their eyesight because Gabapentin pulls nerve endings and as such it was affecting the neural sight pathways too. Don't cold turkey stop. That's dangerous. If you stop it has to be a gradual safe withdrawal. It has also been li ked in a study as a possible causal link to alzheimers disease...probably for the same reason. Do some research and make an informed decision. Taking out the inflammation sources in your diet (eat clean) mild forms of exercise and even CBD gummies can help immensely with the pain levels.
