Upper Hamstring/Lower Buttock Pain
Hi, My wife (47) thought she pulled her hamstring muscle in February of 2025 while shoveling. We are in June of 2026 and the pain has not gotten better and may have even worsened. She has seen about 7 or 8 different doctors (physiatrists and ortho specialists in spine, hamstring, hip, etc, as well as PT). She has had Spinal MRIs (no change from a pre-injury scan), Hamstring MRI (no issues), Hip MRI (degeneration was seen I believe but not anything that would lead the doctor to believe it is causing the pain), nerve studies (normal). She has undergone dry needling, which seems to have made it worse. She has had spinal injections, hamstring injections (X-Ray guided into where it meets the hip). She went to PT and did Laser therapy and another machine as well. The hamstring doctor doesnt believe it is periformis syndrome, and all the doctors keep saying is "at least you dont have to have surgery" and "I am at a loss". The pain is impacting her uality of life at this point. Working out and activity makes it worse. She is taking LOTS of advil. Laying down makes it better. Sitting on hard surfaces makes it worse. The last thing we want is for her to have to go on a narc. But also the amount of Ibuprofen being taken is alot. We just need some answers and not sure where to turn next. We are in Massachusetts. Anyone else have anything similar?

There is a fantastic book that was on the New York Times Best seller's list called
"Healing Back Pain" by John Sarno, MD. I'm just starting it but so far I like what I'm reading on the
thoughts about mind over matter.

1 ReactionWelcome to the world of idiopathic (don't know where its coming from or what the cause is) pain. I've been there and I can sense your concern. One thing is clear-and that is your wife is suffering significant pain and it is caused by something! Build on that fact because it is the one thing you know for sure at this point. Hopefully you will find a practitioner that will be interested enough to figure it out and arrive at an accurate DIAGNOSIS which is the start for any legitimate cure. I wish you well.

1 ReactionI imagine that you have some first rate docs in Massachusetts. Has anyone referred you to one of the big medical centers like Stanford, Mayo, John's Hopkins, etc? Or, how about Brigham and Womens?
Perhaps you have already tried that idea and it has not netted the results you need.

1 ReactionSo nice to see such support from you for your wife.
It is smart both of you are concerned about pain killer intake. Sometimes less but a stronger med is worth it. For example if she gets more relief for a longer time frame. Sorry that all her efforts seeking relief so far haven't resolved her pain. I know how frustrating it is having some of her like pain symptoms. No results & working toward less meds since they mostly don't want relieve pain. You're bound to get good feedback, support & tips from folks here. Being open minded about trying new approaches is key. Utilizing some pain distraction techniques can reduce overall frustration, anger & ugh, so such tools can be new 'best-y' go to's. Bravo to you both for tackling this together. All the best.

3 Reactions@ellesea01 Hi!
I too find it so nice to see your support of your wife. I couldn't make it without the support of mine.
What you describe sounds a lot like what Im going through now. I have had back issues for more than a decade and have gone through multiple fusions and too many to count treatments of various kinds.
Recently my tailbone, buttocks, and right hamstring started hurting badly. The ER took CT scans and Xrays and found nothing.
However, when another doctor requested another CT of my pelvis, they found a fracture in my tailbone and arthritis in both SI joints. The pain is really bad and I know I couldn't get any relief for this with OTC meds. Has any Doctor looked at your sacrum and SI joints?
I hope she gets relief soon.

1 ReactionMaybe she could alternate the ibuprofen with Tylenol. Or use a topical anti inflammatory instead of the ibuprofen?

1 Reaction@rockon79 I love the ‘land of the idiopathic’!
I could be wrong but if the pain is in buttock more than leg it may be a hip issue there is a very good yoga pose which you get into favmce down on floor good leg stretched out bad hip leg bend under your pelvis and raise your arms to hold you up a bit to fit foot in the gentle bed forward and hold it a while it will relieve any sciatica pain you may have.

2 ReactionsI second the John Sarno book. If you do some research there are some doctors and groups that practice what Sarno preaches so maybe there will be some help available there. I hope she finds relief. It all sounds so frustrating.

2 ReactionsHave you tried chiropractic care? You have to do reviews on them, in order to find a good one, one that is intuitive in his manipulation! The doc I go to is helpful, and has shown me a lot of exercises to try.
