Does anyone have both peripheral neuropathy and venous insufficiency?

I have had neuropathy in my feet and legs since 2002 when I began experiencing pins and needles. Since then I have lost most feeling below the knees other than the pains from the disease. I started exercising 5 years ago to help me with balance and walking but 6 months ago things started getting worse. My primary ordered some tests that discovered things like a shredded meniscus, a gout tumor in my knee and now venous insufficiency in deep veins as well as superficial ones. While this explains the stains in my skin in my lower legs, I am trying to figure what if anything is this causing versus what is neuropathy related. My legs have become cumbersome and walking is slow and painful yet I still can .

Hi jum13, I have both - venous reflux and neuropathy. What you're trying to figure out - which condition is most responsible for your symptoms - is the same thing I've been wondering about. The problem is the tremendous overlap in the types of symptoms that both of these conditions cause. I have not had my venous problem treated because I've suspected that the bigger issue for me is the neuropathy. And neither the neurologist nor the vascular surgeon can really tell me if vein ablation would significantly improve my symptoms. I have a new neurologist at Stanford's Autonomic Disorders clinic and when I see him in August he may have some new ideas or suggestions about what to pursue.
I am a Type 2 diabetic. The PN is what me diagnosed in 1991. Two years ago I had the first bone on my right big toe amputated. Both before and after the surgery, I have had several doctors tell me. I should wear compression socks. Since the surgery, I have also been getting foot cramps. I have been wearing Otho shoes and slippers with taylored inserts for them. I had bought a bunch of Compression socks a few years ago when I first complained about the cramps. I don't like wearing them because they are hard to put on and take off. Two weeks ago I had an appointment with a neurologist and he suggested I wear compression socks. I have started wearing them and since then the cramps have gone away. Several have mentioned vein problems. I use the Duluth Trading Company Compression socks and I have had no more cramps! I still don't like them because it takes me from ten to twenty minutes to put them on.

I had venous insufficiency, with a painful leg ulcer, a number of years ago! I went through vein stripping, and that helped, but now, 30 years later, varicose veins have come back. I was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory polyneuropathy last year, and have felt numbness and pins and needles, creeping up slowly in both legs, and both arms! It’s most disconcerting!!
