Anyone experience mood swings and nervousness with Anastrozole?

Posted by jc1926 @jc1926, Aug 11, 2022

I have been taking anastrozole for only 5 months now. I had a lumpectomy and 20 radiation treatments. Just recently I have been experiencing nervousness and mood swings. Has anyone else had any of these side effects?

God bless you for your wonderful and kind words. Yes, I had five very good years and I don’t feel defeated now. No matter the future, I find something to enjoy in each day God gives me.

There is so much strength to be found in these posts. I started anastrozole in Dec '25 and stopped 11 wks later due to frequency, variety and intensity of side effects. Started exemestane and 5 wks in I am worse. Joint pain, carpal tunnel, and so on. Anastrozole also left me with early osteoporosis. Trust yourself. Ask questions, spend as much time as you need to assess info you receive, and remember no one knows your body as well as you do. AIs are a mystery to me. I know I am ready to stop and will live my life every day the way I always have, before BC came along: grateful to God for the gift of life he has blessed me with and every new day he sends to me.

Absolutely have been experiencing anxiety and mood swings. I had lobular breast cancer, lumpectomy, and 33 radiation treatments. I was supposed to start on an AI but after a couple of try’s with two different ones, I stopped taking anything. Five years later I now have metastatic bone cancer and am taking Anastrozole and will be starting Ibrance this week. I should have endured the AI’s after all. I pray you do well and God bless you.. .

HI- I tried 20mg of Tamox and it made me crazy - I was so anxious and everything upset me I felt crazy. I dropped to 10mg and did not feel much better. I got off it for 30 days and now only take 2.5 a day. MD said I'd still see benefit of estrogen reduction but my goal is to be off in July or after 1 year. Looking at alternatives. I cannot live with the upset the CA produced and the drugs. These are powerful drugs and after reading comments, am not sure they work but.......gotta try.

Yes! I am suffering as you are and wondering if there is anything I can take to balance out the low mood issues.

I am almost ready to start it...I finish my 33+5 radiation treatments in June . ( I had 3 tumors in right breast, (8.9 cm, 6 cm, 6 cm), and three in in left breast (2.2 cm, 2 mm, 6 mm). Radiation never even detected the left breast tumors. My breasts just kept shrinking. They were invasive lobular carcinoma. Thanks for the info. I am on so much medicine, it is worrisome. What do you mean by mood swings?

Anastrozole has challenged my memory. I walk & bike at the local Rec Center and that helps but I find the extreme tiredness from this drug is almost overwhelming. I appreciate the many responses from others. Helps me to not feel so alone with this!

Sadly you are not alone I can identify with what you describe - just doing my best and counting the time ! Nearly half way there!

I have taken Anastrozole for almost 3 years. My memory has become scary. My Internist Dr prescribed Memetine a pre Alzheimer drug. It actually is making it worse. I suspect it is the Anastrozole. I have an appointment t with my cancer Dr . tomorrow I am going to ask for a change and try stopping stop the memetine.
