Collagen for osteoporosis?

Posted by cpb @cpb, Jul 26, 2021

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

@laren3 This is a misconception that I hear every time I tell anyone I use AlgaeCal anything. Please be careful about spreading this misinformation. AlgaeCal makes several products, one is a calcium supplement that is sourced from algae, a collagen supplement which is very good and contains the clinical dose of 4 types of collagen (Fortibone, Verisol, Fortigel and UC-type II), and they also offer a Strontium Boost supplement that is a SEPARATE supplement. Their collagen does not contain strontium and their calcium only contains a trace amount that might be present in the algae-derived calcium, but is not deemed sufficient to effect a DEXA. Yes, their Strontium Boost might effect a DEXA. But their collagen is great! I have been taking it for more than a year while on Tymlos with great success, and can see the effect of it in my hair, skin and nails to boot. The confusion must come because they are one of the few selling a strontium supplement, but it is not in all their products!

@michieg I also take AlgaeCal collagen. Recently, under the discussion topic "Osteoporosis Supplements", someone commented that they use Osteonaturals collagen (company associated with Dr Keith McCormick) because it's much cheaper. However, it only contains Fortibone, not the other collagen types for skin, hair and joints. It's sold in a 90 day supply which comes out to about $20/month. By comparison, the AlgaeCal collagen, with an Amazon subscription, costs about $46 for 30 days.

Today, I found a different collagen product on Amazon, Advanced Collagen Complex, which contains the three types of collagen that AlgaeCal has and costs about $36 for 30 days, with an Amazon subscription. I'll order that next time to save $10 for a month's supply, as I like having the additional collagen for skin, hair, and joints.
