GLP-1 and guidance as I cope with serious heart issue
Hello troops, I am about 1 month into taking “the shot” for some weight loss and left side heart failure and just thinking it’s another way our insurance companies are truly dropping the ball. This is quite a journey without any guidance as to nutritional requirements and success. With the help of YouTube I’m negotiating the path to better dietary constraints but considering it’s a treatment for a serious heart issue it seems that some counseling is in order. I know I shouldn’t need my hand held but clearly I do otherwise I wouldn’t be in this position to begin with. I started some time back at 6ft 239 and currently 5.10’ 220 but still obese .

@lisalucier I did make the appropriate requests with my primary but not with Mayo. I have left messages on my portal to Mayo but no response. I’m in my own mind thinking since the cardiology dept prescribed the Wegovy that perhaps they had enough muscle to prescribe a session or two? regarding nutrition in regard to this new drug. I have been invited to a “tele-health” group but it’s mostly ,,,,,,,, a discussion about psychological and very elementary ideas. Very well meaning but “early”.

1 Reaction@ladybugg …not sure which GLP1 you were on but I know tirezepatide has less gastric problems. Interestingly….I was part of a study through 23 and me…that showed your DNA partially predetermines if you have adverse affects from these GLP1 medications. I never had any…and always wondered why!

@alana924 Thanks for sharing. I was on Ozempic. Will discuss alternatives with my doctor.
Oh, my goodness. Given your particular medical history and situation these are questions in which your PCP (primary care physician) SHOULD be giving/guiding you with sound, solid advice and direction. Even hooking you up with a solid dietitian and/or endocrinologist to advise and guide you through your food and fluid intake and exercise program.
Other than that I want to assure you that glp-1 assistance on weight loss is fabulous but it's still very hard work that takes a lot of determination, dedication, and concentration to make sure you are optimizing it's help as much as possible given the expense of the medication and your particular medical situation.
It was nearly all consuming me for the first 12 months because I had to learn what was bad about my food choices (including volume and times of day of consumption), STOP those and commit to only consuming healthy foods (including when and how to consume them).
I ended up switching to nearly all organic food and drink (completely eliminating highly processed food and drink). Happily, because I was consuming far less food and drink, I hardly felt a hit to my wallet on the extra expense that "eating healthy" often, sadly, entails. There was dealing with gastrointestinal side effects, too, which took time, education, and experimentation to find the best solution that worked for my body.
I could go on and on but know these key things:
*Every body has its own pathway to healthy weight loss with the help of glp-1s that will probably take lots of time and experimentation for you to find. *Having good support and encouragement from your primary care physician, dietitian, endocrinologist, loved ones, whatever, is very important.
*It takes time. Some people's bodies respond slowly and some are known as hyper responders. It's genetics, you can't control that but your medical team may switch out which particular brand and or dosage you take/use to help your body respond better and in the healthiest manner.
Best to you on your continuing weight loss journey!
