Help finding HRT over 10 years post menopause

Posted by mwallj @mwallj, Jun 5 1:48pm

Looking for any leads to find prescriber for HRT. My sister with Osteoporosis has been to 3 doctors and Midi and all refused. She is 64, 14 years post menopause. Many people have said Midi will do this, but they refused, saying they are required to follow the guidelines, which are no prescribing HRT more than 10 years post menopause. Location is Pittsburgh or Cleveland.

That’s interesting. Could you share the timing of your HRT? Was it started while you were still receiving Reclast, or after completing the three Reclast infusions (with no overlap)?

Also, where was the 5% bone loss measured—spine, total hip, or femoral neck?

Are you on HRT currently while on Evenity? Please keep us updated on how you’re doing with the second round of Evenity. Thanks!

@mayblin Here were my changes: Spine (L1-L4) -5.1%, Total Hip (left) -6.5%, and Femoral Neck (left) -4.7%.

I started HRT roughly 2-3 months after last Reclast.

I was on HRT for the first 3 Evenity injections (this go around) but took myself off it 6 week ago. It wasn't helping my neuropathy and clearly it didn't help my bones so I didn't want to take the risk of being on it at my age. I also, didn't sleep well on it. I'm 4 months in to my 2nd round of Evenity. No issues thus far. Will keep you posted.

HRT treatment is a good discussion to have, not just for bone health (especially for peri and barely post menopause) but other problems (prolapse, dryness, comfort). I realize (2 years in) now that reversing osteoporosis will probably not happen, sometimes simply not getting worse is the goal. I foolishly thought the doctor was prescribing medication that would FOR SURE help BMD…but maybe not or not much. So thankful for sites like this, otherwise I’d completely lacking in a lot of the information about osteoporosis and treatment for a lifelong chronic disease with no cure.

@jozer

If you are including testosterone in the hrt/bhrt the it is fabulous for libido too.
Sometimes I think we women forget that testosterone is a part of our hormone makeup. Not as much as men but still very important.

@zygote if you have your uterus you must take progesterone.

@samclembeau Could you explain exactly what you are taking and the dosage? Did your doctor express any negative comments before prescribing? My doctor has so far refused to prescribe this for me. Thanks.

I take .05 transdermal patch twice a week and 100 mg progesterone every night. (never slept better). Endo did not prescribe because he thought hormones needed different followup care. so I went to a GYN. she saw no problem starting it.

@jeanvarney, it’s a very interesting sequencing. If your bone turnover markers were tested throughout the treatment, they might be quite informative. Thanks for sharing, and best luck with second round of Evenity.

@cliffdweller This is great, but my doctor says no hormones for me. So how to find a doctor that will take the time to find out if I could go back on HRT? The doctor I was going to for it previously, retired.

@clain

What were you told about why you are not a candidate?

@clain You go to a functional/integrative doctor. Traditional are not trained on HRT.

@gravity3 Only because of age and that study that was done in 2002, but found to be flawed. Some doctors are still following that.
