In May 2018 I had posterior cervical fusion from C3,4,5,6.
I’m upset now bc I had No symptoms before surgery. No Pain, weakness, numbness, nothing except my MRI showed normal age related stenosis, I was 61 years at that time. I trusted the orthopedic spine surgeon. Big mistake. He did a good job scaring me to do the surgery.
Jan 2021 chronic pain started. Each year it got worse, tried all the injections available with no results.
June 2024 tried Abbott spinal cord stimulator trial with no good results. Nov. 2025 tried Nevro high frequency SCS that made me feel horrible.
I’m on daily Morphine 15mg tabs 2x daily with very little help; I built up a tolerance.
Neck pain is 20 hours a day; I suffer eating in excruciating pain at dining table each meal, sitting on toilet is painful; walking is painful. By dinner time I’m so depressed. I have to pray so I’ll be able ok to floss and brush my teeth every day.
Full shower Bath is in very high Pain; I have to bathe in morning bc I can tolerate the pain and have to listen to oldies music to help Refocus my mind and to keep telling myself bathing is good exercise. Also have to constantly Distract myself by imagining my good times with family.
I have to take Valium 5mg tab to help me sleep every night.
I’m in pain as soon as I open my eyes in morning at 3:00 am.
I don’t know what to do.
I see via Chronic Pain Psychologist via Zoom every two weeks.
Thanks for listening!

I’m in constant high pain. I take an extended release tramadol once a day and a regular release tramadol as needed. It definitely takes the edge off, but I’m never pain free. I take klonopin (I know that’s spelled wrong) to help me sleep. I’m heading to bed now. I pray that we both get some rest.

Hi,
My name is Rick. I’ve been diagnosed with CPPD after a 3 year bout with PMR. Since I had significant side effects from a couple of years on Prednisone, I am not wanting to use it for the CPPD. I tried Hydroxychloroquine but had a terrible allergic reaction. Rheumatologist is suggesting Colchicine or Methotrexate. Does anyone have experience with these drugs or an opinion about what worked for them?

Hi Linda,
I am 78 & have had 2 discs removed L5-S1 in 1979 & L4-L5 in 1988.
I take 100 mg of Lyrica 3 times a day (6 or 7 am, 11:30am & 4:30 pm. I also take 30 mg of Amitriptyline at 9:30 pm to get 6 - 7 hrs of sleep. P.S. I use my cellphone to alert me when it is time to take drugs, except when I wake up. Really effective.
However, when I suffer from occasional severe neuropathic pain episodes of 4 - 8 hrs or sometimes 2 - 4 days, I take Nucynta IR since it was introduced in Canada in 2017. It is amazing because it allows me to eat anything & after the episode I can read, watch TV, & enjoy life. Before Nucynta IR, I took Oxycodone from 2000 - 2016 to manage severe neuropathic pain episodes & had issues with nausea & sleepiness which interfered with my ability to work or travel.
Good luck

@hk3jnic5y0okl2 thank you for you information. Pain that doesn’t show gets very little understanding. Especially back pain. How many times have you been told that you “look fine?”” Have a great time with your travels.

@muncie22 I had surgery on Friday the 13th in August 1976. I went thru HELL for 20 years. I had a husband that was gone on business much of the week and 3 sons 11, 14and 16. Life was hard and thought a lot about killing my self. Finally I was sent to a pain management doctor. That was when a doctor could prescribe as much pain meds that he thought you needed. I was so glad to get help. It didn’t even have to kill all my pain. Just to give me some relief. As the years have passed my life changed. My sons went off to collage, married and have families. My husband died 26 years ago. I take much less pain meds now. I used to take 3 - 80 mg of OxyContin and 2 -40 mg of OxyContin for break thru pain. There were more pain killers but that’s what I took for a long time. Now I take 2- 40 mg and 10 mg OxyContin. I have serve emphysema so I am afraid they may cut that. I am HOT when no one is. I think it has messed up somehow to cause this. Sorry I have about written a book. I really mean to say hang in there. I KNOW how rough you have it but it’s not much help today but sometimes you can do like me. Hang in there and time heals some of the mess a surgeon did to you. I would never have anything but I neurosurgeon now. Live and learn. . Let know how you are doing. I really care. Mine got easier and I pray you’re will also.

@virtuous69 ,I also take Norco for bad pain.whats so sad is the people that get them to sell, it hurts the innocent ones who truly need them..I don't like to tell people i take them because of hearing the speech of addiction..I know of people that will take several at a time or sell them, now that's a bad addiction and disgust me when people abuse them! Bad pain is real, everyone handles pain differently,I never abuse mine or take more then i should,I also suffer with bad arthritis all in my back, I'm only 59 but my Dr told me i have the back of a 90 yr old..I also have fibromyalgia, wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy! Also have other health issues but can relate to some of your pain.God Bless....

@barbaraspainhour I agree with you about pain meds. People who take them to get high or what ever they get from taking them makes me angry. So many suffer because they can not pain relief.

I so agree.
I have had pain on the bottom of my feet for decades.
Back pain for decades.
It’s just part of my life.
There are multiple problems with my spine but not bad enough for intervention.
I cannot stand still for very long before the pain gets much worse…. like waiting in a grocery line.
After being in bed all night I am quite stiff and sore.
It takes some time for that to abate.
I have to be careful the way I sit etc.
I can manage my daily cleaning, cooking, laundry etc but it would be wonderful to have a pain free day.
Walking seems to help. Being stationary makes things worse.
But low level pain is my companion.
I am grateful though that I can still carry on.

@frodo777 I saw you also have taken pain meds for a long time. I wonder if anybody is having a problem like mine. I do not know for sure but reading up on my problem makes me think is because I have taken OxyContin for over 30 years. I get HOT HOT when no one else does. I get teased about going thru the change but I am 87. In research I read that OxyContin can mess up your hormones and thyroid. Just wonder if anyone shares this problem. I have been afraid to talk to
My Doctor about it because they will think I am crazy.

@linda86 YOU ARE NOT CRAZY!! I suffer from that side effect as well. It is not menopause. It is not hormonal. It is a side effect of high-dose opioids. It drives me crazy too! Everyone is fine and I am burning up on fire sweating to death like it’s 110° inside. It is by far the worst side effect of the medication’s. I’m sorry you are suffering that and thankful to know. I’m not crazy either! I just wish I had a better answer for a resolution!

What do you do about the constipation?
I tried Miralax powder & ended up with cramping & diahrea. K

@kayraymat, I have experimented enough to find a routine that works for me. I take docusate sodium 100 mg four times a day. Just the stool softener by itself. I take one Senna vegetable laxative in the morning and one at bedtime if needed. 1 teaspoon of Fiber one in my tea in the morning and or evening if I have another cup. I don’t experience any harsh laxative feelings, or reactions with that routine.

@gypsyblue I noticed you take senna. My pain doctor told me to take that. All natural and no side effects. Now they have me on one for people who take pain meds. Sometimes I think they must own an interest in these medicine company the way they want you to take the newest and most expensive meds they have.
