Will eating ever be enjoyable again?

I had an esophagectomy over a year now. Mostly I have been able to get food down, but it is always uncomfortable and I find myself just wanting to live off Ensure. Food looks appetizing to me but after 1 bite I am almost done. It feels like there is something blocking my throat all the time. After 1 year post-surgery I finally asked for another dilation. But it did not help at all, which is a mystery.
So, is this the best it can get? I guess I can survive like this. Is it unreasonable to want to improve my swallowing? I'd like to hear others' experiences.

After three years out from surgery I had food getting stuck in the base of my throat. No ussues up until then. Went in for endoscopy expecting to get a dilatation. Doctor said everything looked good and no dilatation was needed. He said there is a muscle in the base of the throat that he stretched out just to see if it would help. I haven't any proplems since. I recently went for a check up and mentioned this to my oncologist. He said that can happen from the radiation.

I'm a year and half out from my esophogectomy and have occasional food blockage. My GI is conducting a floreoscopy and esophogogastroduodendoscopy exam. They do this to measure the stomach muscle strength that pushes food down our system. I'll have a catheter placed through the nose into my stomach for 2 4 hours of monitoring. I'm having it done in a couple weeks and will let you know what they find out. The only other thing that helps is slow pace and lots of chewing during my meals.

I’m 6-1/2 months out from my esophogectomy. Although I have had no constriction issues, I struggle with eating enough calories because I’m never hungry and get uncomfortable if I eat more than just a little at a time. Dumping syndrome is also an issue for me. I read that even if the surgeon uses nerve sparing techniques, the vagus nerves can be damaged or cut, and they control appetite or lack of appetite.

I am almost 1 year since my Ivor Lewis Esophagectomy, and really the only issues I have now is the volume of food I can eat... not as much as I used to. I am not one to snack all the time as I have concerns about insulin spikes by eating frequently and want to keep that from happening so I am mostly a 1 meal a day eater and really focus on nutrient dense food... sad to here you are having issues as I hope to avoid that specific one as well

I don't understand how you can eat one meal a day I had an esophagectomy seven years ago and I eat four small meals a day at 5:30 830 1 o'clock and 430. I go to sleep at nine. I drink about 10 to 12 glasses of water a day. There's no way I could get in enough food in one meal we were told to eat small meals I'm mostly vegan eating unprocessed food like banana kiwi hemp oatmeal sourdough bread a little bit of extra-virgin olive oil. I was eating 2 ounces of bok choy and 2 ounces of fennel and 3 1/2 ounces of EINKORN and 2 ounces of kale made into a purée but now I substituted the 2 ounces of kale for kale powder and I started out with 2 teaspoons and if it digest well, I'll go up to 4 teaspoons.I also eat nut butter connections
made from pumpkin seeds, pecans and walnuts and hemp hearts. I do eat some hemp powder. Also I'm 5 foot three having had two fractures in my back because I have really bad osteoporosis and I weigh about 110 it's very hard to keep my weight up. I try to walk two or three hours a day not fast and I do 40 minutes of exercise every morning and I'm just starting PT having hurt my back muscles and I'm gonna start tai chi soon. Just 15 minutes. I can't eat anything like salad and I'm on a low FOD map diet because I have IBS and I'm prediabetic and have hypoglycemia I'm 81 and there's a lot going on. I'm very lucky to be alive. I have to go through a CAT scan with Contrast next week for cancer surveillance. I'm very nervous. I hate the test because I don't like drinking the iodine water solution before.

@lindainca my husband is 5 years (!) after his surgery and chemo, and he still is not hungry, does not have any appetite and does not enjoy food at all. Due to zincbisglycitate and magnesimbisglycitate he at least has hardly any diarrhea anymore and hardly any dumps, but he is totally under the weather ...yesterday was a bad day, but the 2 weeks before were great. It really takes a lot of time, some don't have any problems others have them for years. But try different supplements, please do so, especially bacteria, vitamins, and magnesium bisglycinateand zinc bisglycinate, not the usual magenisium. Zinc is so important, and we learned this only 4 weeks ago. Since he is taking zinc bisglycinate, he increasingly feels better.....it is a long way, but you will get there...and NEVER EVER give up!!!!!!!
