Among the many ironies of the old dictum is that
bio-identical estrogen is actually protective for breast cancer... my dose has just doubled - I'm 86 - for help with osteoporosis and I already am thinking more clearly, having more energy, plus an additional feeling of well-being. One recent day I realized I was feeling exactly like my old self in my late 60s, which was quite astonishing.

Ithere is so much controversy about bioidentical hormones but in my experience, I have had nothing but positive results if anyone does think of going on on these hormones, please find a good integrative medicine specialist. am also on bioidentical hormones and feel great so far. I have posted my journey before. I started on the creams more than 20 years ago and now have switched to pellet therapy. I can not wait for my dexa this Feb. It will be a year on the pellet. I can't believe my energy level and anxiety etc have improved dramatically. Thank you for sharing this important information. I opted to go on HRT after I completed 2 years of Forteo . After much reading and careful consideration, I felt it was the best and most natural option for me and my bones. I was about 10 years out of menopause which was not optimal but none of our options really are. It's been about 3 years and I've mostly maintained my density.
The issues of concern with HRT were raised in the Women's Health Initiative Study which turned out to be a somewhat flawed study and the negative results were exaggerated and overblown by the media causing a steep decline in usage. More recently, it is coming full circle and more and more, HRT is being considered a viable option for women to preserve their bones and ease menopausal symptoms. If you have had breast cancer or CVD or have a genetic risk, I can understand not wanting to utilize this option but if those predispositions are not present, I think it's a viable option. I'm really glad I'm on it (along with progesterone which is necessary since I have a uterus). I only wish I had gone on it earlier as my naturopath had suggested about 10 years ago. I was too afraid and wanted to get through menopause naturally. Had I listened to her, I would likely still have a healthy spine and better quality of life.
I'd love to know if others are on HRT and at what dose. I currently use the lowest dose of .025 estradiol transdermal patch and 100 mg progesterone (which seems to be the agreed upon dosage of progesterone to counter risks). I'm considering increasing my estradiol with the hopes of greater preservation. Anyone on HRT? What dose and method are you using?

How are you now? My understanding is that micro progesterone can help create new bone density but progestins harm bone density. Don’t have a uterus but I do not tolerate estradiol well at all and micro progesterone most help menopause symptoms wise. But I don’t tolerate micro progesterone oral route, the first pass through the liver and metabolites. Only tolerate the caps used vaginal route or potent progesterone cream. But the commercial caps vaginal route better. I don’t have a uterus though.

Side note, I also started taking vitamin K2 with mk4 and mk7 for bone density and vascular health.

I've maintained for about 6 years. I recently increased my dose of estradiol and progesterone as I've had concerns with individual vertebrae losing density. I'm due for a dexa this year.

@nme1985

Also had the pellets with estradiol and testosterone. I wonder why so few women get testosterone also. I used a functional provider for my hormones.

Do you feel better with the pellets? I am getting them on Monday and I can’t wait as I had a partial knee replacement and they would not let me get the pallets so it’s been since September! I was doing the creams but they just don’t cut it… I cant wait. so many women suffer from lack of hormones. I feel bad for them bad for medical science that hasn’t caught up. It is getting better though my 40-year-old daughter is going to the integrative medicine doctor and they found out she had almost 0 hormones in each category. She is on the creams at this point. It feels a world of difference.

I loved the pellets. However, I just made the decision to return to estradiol patch, testosterone cream, plus the progesterone and estradiol vaginal cream. I am trying to cut back on medical appointments and expenses.

@nme1985 what is “pellet” therapy? Is that the same as a vaginal suppository?

REPLY

No. It is using bioidentical hormones of estradiol testosterone, and a bioidentical pill of progesterone to balance your system. You have to see an integrative medicine specialist for this extensive blood work has to be done. A lot of women are finally getting help. You can search integrative medicine in your area and I’m sure you will find a practitioner. You can go get an opinion and see how you feel about it. Good luck.
