What do you say?
Hi, I just got back from a big box store with minimal customer service. Using my walker, I’m obviously struggling to get my purchase through the automated checkout. (No human cashiers anymore). Enter a nice young man and possibly his father. Young man insists on carrying the purchase for me and older man on paying for it. I tried saying “No thank you” to the $20 purchase, but they insisted and so after offering profuse assurances that I could pay, I said “Thank you” and took the help. Any suggestions?

Speaking as someone who has always found it difficult to ask for any kind of help, I'm not sure how I would react, but I'm reminded of a story someone told me many years ago when toll booths were cash only. Someone told me that they would occasionally pay their toll and also pay for the car behind them in line. In this case it wasn't out of kindness but to have them guessing who was paying their toll and why. Getting back to this post, sometimes it's just good to know that the values instilled in us while growing up are still being taught by some parents.

4 Reactions@kjoed53 , a few years ago it was a popular practice to pay the charge for the car behind you in line at Starbucks.
I’ve had mine paid for several times and I have covered others as well. The theory was that as you were notified your coffee had been paid by the car ahead, then you say, let me pay for the one behind me, and so on…..

I must have missed that, but I was never a big fan of Starbucks coffee and these days it's just so much easier to order and pay on the app. Sometimes I wish there was a way to turn back the clock, but then again maybe we're better not living through some things twice.

1 Reaction@woondogger I imagine that it also gives great pleasure to the person who did this act of kindness too. 😊
