Having shortness of breath for almost a year now

Posted by globaloutlet @globaloutlet, May 27 7:18pm

I have been having shortness of breath since last August 2025. Went to see pulmonologist, cardiologist, allergy specialist and GI doctor. Did so many tests from lungs to gut issue tests. Went to ER 4 times, and hospitalized 3 days for heart condition, but they still couldn't find the root cause of my shortness of breath. Did angiogram and doctor said no blockage. Thinking of going to Mayo Clinic for answer but I don't know where to start and what doctor to go to. Help ! I am so tired for not be able to breath 🙁

Does anyone one have sleep apnea with this SOB. Like waking up breathless in a panic? Happens to me occasionally.

@stew80 I have asthma and sleep apnea. My sleep study showed that my oxygen saturation occasionally dropped into the 70s throughout the night. And yes, I did have episodes of waking up breathless. Do you have a CPAP? If not, you might want to ask your pulmonologist if this would be indicated in your case. My CPAP has solved the problem. Although once in a while I do wake up with the darn thing situated on my forehead, blowing air into my eyes..... I hope you find answers soon! XO

Thanks. I am going to look into a CPAP.

I went from 48 apnoeas an hour to 4.4 with a dental splint for sleep apnoea. Works for me thankfully...not for all apparently. Might be worth an exploration.

Hi @globaloutlet, there is a long standing thread with a lot of comments on mysterious shortness of breath, or for me, what I would call 'air hunger' or dyspnea. The feeling like I can't get a deep breath. If that's what you're experiencing, first of all I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It's so hard because breathing is a core function. But this thread has a lot of ideas and what has worked for people and some suggestions of things to look further into such as various doctor tests and breathing exercises to help with the symptoms. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mysterious-shortness-of-breath/

@gabrielm wow Gabe thank you SO much. You experienced what I am experiencing now. The med that your GI doctor prescribed you was the same med he gave me for my GERD I will try the breathing exercise you did. I am afraid I am having this Coronary Microvascular Disease. All these “health issues” came after my menopause :(. Again thank you for taking the time to reply my question.

Please don’t give up. Listen to this video, very helpful. And if you decide to order the Breather, don’t pay $49 for it. I found it for $18 at Happy Shopee with free shipping. Best of luck. https://happyshopee.com

Same. It all happened to me in '21. For me it was COPD and now I take Trelegy and I still have shortness of breath. Everyone acts like I'm strange when I report these symptoms. I have never found relief.

Oh boy can I relate to this. Five years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastasized melanoma in my lung. I went on immunotherapy Keytruda. I went into remission rather quickly but this severe shortness of breath is so severe I cannot function. My quality of life is next to nothing.
I cant walk 20 feet without feeling like it's my last breath. As soon as I sit I am as good as new. I cant do a simple task such as take a shower, make a bed, get dressed, load the dishwasher.
I have been to a heart doctor (keytruda damaged my heart) my lung doctor and oncologist. All their test come out normal.
I am at a loss.

I'm the same way. Dressing, taking shower, walking from 1 room to another all create extreme shortness of breath. Have bronchiestis and have had picc lines, many different antibiotics, rehab therapy and nothing has helped.

I too have shortness of breath on occasions. I have had every test imaginable and even went to the number one respiratory hospital in the nation in Colorado they could not diagnose my problem. Some days I am housebound and have trouble walking from room to room. Other days, I am just fine with no confinements. I never know from day-to-day what to expect. Since my breathing problems are erratic. They are hard to define. This has been going on for four years. I am now at a complete loss. I have no trouble breathing at night time. Any new ideas out there?
