Loss of smell for 2.5 years - started to come back

Hi All
I have a story with loss of smell that may be useful for some of losing it long time and desperate for some hope and try something new

I got covid Nov 2023 for second time, this time i lost smell completely in Dec2023
April 2024, smell started to come back for few minutes then go away again suddenly. I stayed patient as i read for some people it can go up to a year
Then the following months were the same, smell can come back for few minutes usually during the noon to after noon time then disappear

Few many month it will be lost completely all day

Until june 2025, I knew that I have this MTHFR gene mutation which is related to the metabolism of vitamin B12. This vitamin is important to neurons
So started talking methyalated vitamin B supplement but only half the dose
Slowly smell became more frequently
Like it can stay an hour long or few hours

Few months like this and suddenly i get a set back again since DEc2025

April 2026, a doctor prescribed Methylphenidate 5 mg tablet daily
And at same time i doubled dose of methylated Vitamin B

Now since a week I started suddenly to have smell most of the day and even strong sense
Like only first half an hour in morning is not there and while I am sleep. But rest of the day is there

I am not sure what was the real fix
Methylphenidate or
The methylated vitamin B supplement
But I think it is not only The nerve there is also chemical component like your dopamine in cortex and stuff
I really wish everyone luck with this dreading symptoms
Hang in there, it is annoying but i was keepinv myself steady by saying at least I can see and hear and feel
Hang in there everyone and wish all of yoi the best

Sense of smell gone since May 2023. Occasionally I'll get a light whif of something but I can't count on either sense of smell or taste to be reliable. I didn't realize these senses are as important as they are for signaling danger as in smoke, or off-odors. No sign of them coming back, not yet.

@joanland I am so sorry. This is so much to sort out!

It’s my impression that it’s not that doctors ignore the smell/taste problem, but they feel helpless. They don’t have any treatments to offer, except scent training. Of course, if they can treat things like vitamin deficiencies, infections, tumors, but if they aren’t the culprit, there aren’t other options.

@lkirnbauer Acupuncture helped me get my taste and smell back. It took 3 years to get it fully back. Had some after a year. Was enough to deal with it. I Still did a routine of smelling strong spices, pure horseradish, garlic and several essential oils.

@gnana6 I did needling. Muscle and nerve massaging. The laser massage worked also. I find using music therapy from 8:00 pm - 6:00 am at low level 20-30 db helped with recoding my brain also. I wear my headphones during that time or my speakers, volume set 20-30db (whisper level). After two weeks, beginning to hear stereo again and also hearing is improving. My right ear has lost about 50% of its capacity to hear. With the recoding of the brain I find my hearing improving with sounds. Added bonus my friend; I fall asleep every night listening to 60s-70s music. (rock, folk, country. One mistake of music therapy is too increase the volume to cancel out the ringing. Recoding takes time and must be down at the 20-30 db level. Hope this helped friend. Its seems to be working for me past two weeks of improvement.

I did not lose smell-which I feel is more important. but lost taste of most protein foods-except peanuts. I can taste fruits, vegetables , and strong spices and flavors-like chocolate. So as long as I can smell, I do not worry about it.
