Are you ever free of breast cancer?
I had a single mastecomy (left) in March 2023 after 3 tumors found through mammogram.
3 years later, I'm taking Exemestane and doing all the exams I need to do (self exam, yearly MRI, yearly mastectomy).
Since the cancer was estrogen positive, I need to continue on Exemestane for 7 more years. I've read that estrogen positive breast cancer can return after that.
So are we never in remission?

1 Reaction@mistymar what was your Onco score and lingering side effects if you don’t mind?
@ebabor oncotype was 28. Not high but the figures I got from 2 doctors was chemo would reduce chance of distant metastasis by 17-20%. Less than double digits I wouldn’t have done it but this was in that rock/hard place area. I still have low lymph count over 2 1/2 years later so may be permanent damage. Messed up my mouth big time - still get sores and have had 4 crowns since then. I have no appetite and lost a lot of sense of taste still. Still feel less strong than before - can’t do what I used to. Did get hair back (good) but thinner and of course ai worsens that. Overall, I’m not doing bad, it’s just all this low level stuff that could be residual chemo, could be ai, could be age.

2 Reactions@mistymar thank you for sharing. I’m 74 and Onco score of 26. My MO wanted me to do chemo but I declined. I was afraid of serious long term side effects. Did radiation 16 rounds and done. Not much side effects currently but I just finished last Thursday. Will start AI beginning of July. Praying for little side effects. Prayers for your strength and recovery

1 ReactionI'm 84. At age 79 I had lumpectomy , chemo and radiation. I was HER2positive. I refused anti hormone drugs. I feel great and my blood work shows no signs of cancer. My hair is at it's best ever. My heart is in good shape.

2 ReactionsI am almost 71, diagnosed in 2021. Two lumps in left breast, once scores zero and ten. No chemo recommended. But surgeon said left breast “needs to go.” I chose a bilateral mastectomy. Told I needed radiation because of some cells in lymph nodes but I declined. Was estrogen positive, also declined letrozole. By 2024, stage 4, netastatic breast cancer in lymph system and bones. Been on Letrozole since November of 2024. Lots of unpleasant side effects from Letrozole. I don’t have much choice of discontinuing an AI ever. Had surgery in left thumb and right thumb, middle finger and little finger for trigger finger due to Letrozole side effects. Ugh.

4 Reactions@penny21 Sorry to hear about your worsening symptoms and the cancer becoming stage 4. I agree that a lot of us don't have a much choice but to stay on AI meds.
Please stay strong!
I used NED, non evidence of disease, after my first one. And I was right to use that as 2 years after I got a second one after learning about my rare genetic mutation.

@lesliek808 thank you!
@mistymar so sorry to hear this. It is hard to have symptoms that don’t go away because they are side effects of drugs. I am considering taking Zimbalta (sp?) for pain and depression. I hate to add another drug to the mix. Has anyone ever tried Zimbalta?
