What’s it like having an ICD? I don’t want to do it.

I am 75 years old and was just diagnosed with hereditary HCM. I was shocked that my LVEF is only 35%. I feel fine. My brothers are begging me to go ahead and get an ICD, but I don’t want to.

Interesting thread.
I am awaiting appointment for my third ICD.
I received my first ICD about 20 years ago.
I had a heart attack at 35 years of age . 90% blockage of
left anterior descending artery, (the widow maker).
In 1981 there was no stent therapy.
Docs advised the damage had been done, thus no open heart surgery.
My ejection fraction has fluctuated between 25 and 40 over the years.
My ICD paces me at 60BPM. I have never received a shock.
I do take Jardiance as well as Lisinipril and Metoprolol.
I am now 79 years old and feel well.
My advice, get it!

Too much medication is not good. I was on 13 medications, now I’m down to 3. Listen to your body and message your doctor on the patient portal app if you can’t get in right away. Medications affects people differently. That’s why’s there’s several medications that doe the same thing.

@ejbb Keep in mind that a visit to the ER or Urgent Care is an option. Are one or both of these nearby?

@walkinggirl Been there twice (ER) and they've performed chest x-ray, EKG, brain scan, etc. but I leave with no reason for extreme dizziness. Thank you, though!

@ejbb You have certainly covered all of the bases! Waiting and waiting for your appointment is frustrating ((HUG)). I can share that a few weeks after my septal myectomy, I experienced dizziness and giddiness and ended up with an ICD that I named Buddy to eliminate the arrythmias that developed. You will see an electrophysiologist (good!), it will be good to find out if it's a heart electrical problem and what recommendations are made. I have a suggestion: call the offices where you are scheduled to go - often - even daily - to see if there are any cancellations. That has worked for me and others - I've even "gotten in" later the same day. Easier for the scheduler who does not need to search for the wait list.
