Extreme dry eyes; could it be the Tymlos?

Posted by CarolWill @carolwill3404, May 25 8:18am

I've had dry eyes in the past that I managed to cope with. I started Tymlos about 2 months ago. Lately my eyes are so dry that I'm almost panicking about what to do. I have an appointment tomorrow but I'm finding that I'm conscious of my dry eyes almost from the moment I wake up to when I go to bed. This is not normal for me. And, yes, they don't list dry eye for Tymlos but I'm wondering if anyone has had this experience and should I have to stop the Tymlos, am I early enough in the Tymlos process to not cause issues with stopping. I'm feeling kind of desperate. Who would have known that dry eyes would be so debilitating. I'm 71, Type 1 diabetes well treated, pretty active female.

Not sure about the association, but dry eyes is extremely common and can be treated successfully.

@tillymack Thanks, I do know that dry eye is common. However, I also have some cornea issues possibly stemming from a dry eye disease. From the sound of it, it's not just your typical dry eye. I was just trying to eliminate the Tymlos possibility. My ophthalmologist has been focusing more on my retinas (due to the Type 1 diabetes) and I feel like my corneas got a bit neglected. Tomorrow is a cornea focused appointment. There are some days where I feel like my doctors aren't communicating clearly with me. For instance, at my last appointment, my favorite Dr. mentioned a genetic cornea disease that was in my records. Unless I've completely forgotten, this was never clearly stated to me or I would have been relentlessly researching it (academic librarian here). Appreciated!

I'm not on Tymlos but have had dry eyes for years. One doc suggested putting a warm wet cloth over my eyes every night. This was probably somewhat helpful but the warmth lasted about 2 seconds and the wet was just annoying to deal with getting my hair wet. Plus I just didn't like taking the time for it. But then I found heated eye masks that I can put on when I'm going to sleep. The one I have stays warm for up to 60 minutes, with 3 temp choices. It was only about $30 or so. I don't like a sleep mask but I'm able to fall asleep anyway and then take it off when it's done. It has really helped my dry eyes as well as drinking more water. The warmth is just opening up the blood vessels to encourage circulation. You might need something more but this could be a tool in your box 🙂

@carolwill3404, I also have dry eyes. They got worse when I had cataract surgery. I only could tolerate a half dose of Tymlos and I'm not sure if it affected my dry eyes. I put a cloth that I warm in the microwave on my eyes every morning to melt any oil. Then I use a thin cotton towel, the old kind we used to use for babies, to wipe the edges of my lids. I am now on an eye drop that actually works! It is called Miebo. If I forget to put it in my eyes, I can tell right away when driving because I can't see as well. It is dangerous for driving and not good for your eyes to have them too dry.

@drsuefowler Thank you. Looks like this is a prescription; I'll ask at my next appointment.

I've been struggling with dry eyes for years. This is the best remedy for me at least:

@carolwill3404 There are several choices on Amazon. I had one by Ezona that I liked but it stopped working after a few months. The one I have now is from Aroma Season Store. It was only $20 and is still working going on a year. I do have a battery pack that I use with it but I think you can plug it into a wall outlet with a power adaptor like you would with a phone. It has a reasonably long cable to it.
