Tension type sub-occipital headache (hollow-space back of head)

Posted by bethaw @bethaw, May 6 8:08pm

Anyone have sub-occipital tension type headaches-CHRONIC. Tend to spike in stress or physical strenuous neck type movement. Does anyone take or know of preventative medicine. I have done everything you could imagine to try to not use medicine but only thing that has touched it is Excedrine tension and I have to take 2 caplets every day which I’m kinda scared of??? I have heard continuously the rebound headache lecture?? Really…just taking 2 a day. I e done chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, breathing. etc., etc, etc. I should add, all of this started after a concussion 7 years ago. I have suffered since with this issue. Thanks!

bethaw, have you had an MRI of the cervical neck.

Yes, I have had an mri and ct scan. Most professionals are describing with a “stuck in fight or flight” nervous system. Can this be a “real” thing happening. I do know I was diagnosed right after the concussion with severe anxiety?? Wondering if the stick nervous system can really be reversed after 7 years??

@bethaw Have you considered vestibular therapy with someone that has experience with TBI recovery? This can help calm the nervous system- fight or flight response.

Thank you so much for your info. I actually have found a neuro chiropractor who deals with vestibular therapy. I have just started seeing him. Hoping for the best! Thanks!

Hello! I wanted to ask if you personally have had this procedure done and if it helped and where?? How do I know a good place to get this done. Thanks a million!

I was in a really bad car accident with 2 people road raging on the freeway and hit from front and back (trunk ended up in my back seat). I developed occupational
Occiptal migraines and Post Concussion Syndrome. 9 months later I still have them. I bought an ice "hat" (pack you wear on your head) and that helps at times. But unfortunately I do have to take meds (preventive and as needed) as well as botox injections for them. I've never heard of vestibular therapy as others have mentioned, so I'll definitely look into that. But try the ice. Good luck 👍

So sorry to hear of your car wreck. I also know of post concussion syndrome! Ugh!
Thank you for your reply! I have seen the ice hats advertised. My only issue is I get these basically every day or every other day, but I have thought of getting one! Thanks for the reminder!
Hope you feel better soon too!
