Prescribed Eliquis 5mg 2 x a day

Posted by foxmate57 @foxmate57, May 20 6:32am

3 years ago was prescribed Eliquis 5mg 2 x per day. After legs ultrasound revealed had a DVT. Dr said, I have blood disorder, more prone to develop blood clots rather than bleeding, I was told by the Dr and Eliquis prescription is for life. No specific blood test for this medical condition. Is anyone in the same situation? I was never told exactly what kind of blood disorder I have in the first place? I'll be 78 years old this June 8. My a1c 6.9, Ave BC 130, do stretching exercises and walk 1.5 miles 5 to 6 times a week before breakfast. Try to eat healthy diet, watch my sugar intake. Please share your thoughts, comments or related experiences. Thank you.

I have been on blood thinners for the last 20 months following a DVT and bilateral pulmonary embolisms. I too have Factor V Leiden homozygote. In my case I am on Rivaroxaban 20 mg (generic of Xeralto).
Discussing with the dr to reduce dose to 10mg. Trying to weigh the risk of thrombosis vs bleeding.
It seems ultimately it will be my decision which risk to live with. There is some research on the subject but not extensive as far as I can find.

@aycan I don't know if I had answered you previously, but just in case, from my research, it seems like Eliquis has few bleeding risks. It is very expensive, though. It is not a generic yet.

Thank you. I didn't know it had fewer bleeding risks. I will look into it!

@bbmj06 MGUS stable for 20 years. Doc blaming MGUS for heart block, stroke, and now DVT and PE. Eliquis for life. I am reading that MGUS IGG/Kappa may react this way to COVID vax. I was in a Moderna study through Moffitt during the pandemic and am trying to get Moderna’s attention. Hence this post.

@suzykaye I’ve read studies suggesting MGUS and SMM can cause these problems due to “thickening” of blood due to paraproteins. We don’t need to be active MM for adverse effects.

My husband has been on eliquis for at least four years for a severe groin blood clot that almost blocked the whole vein. They also said he is on it for life. He got the clot while getting treatments for the MDS and from the hematologist but now he gets it from his primary to subscribe.

@cad43 The hospital gave me a coupon from the manufacturer of Eliquis which allows me to get the 1st 12 months for only $10 each month. I just had to call the phone number listed and provide a number on the coupon to register & receive the discount for a year. (It seems like it is only for individuals who do not have government provided drug coverage)

@aycan oh my! PE’s can cause death. Thankfully, we are in the group of survivors. My brother is severely impaired by factor V & it has contributed to a few lifelong complications. He was in study group with the National Blood Clot Alliance about a year ago. I believe you can find more information from that organization.

@bbmj06 Unfortunately, I am on a Medicare advantage plan, so I'm not eligible for that. And I don't understand. Most of us Seniors have limited income, and need the help. But so glad you are taking advantage of it.

@cad43 I agree. I wish they didn’t have that limitation on it!

I take Eliquis 2.5 mg. 2 x's daily also. It counteracts the clot forming effects of the Revlamid I take for multi-myeloma. I will be taking it for the rest of my life.
