Long-term non-allergic chronic rhinitis / nothing helping

Posted by bentoboy @bentoboy, Apr 15 1:25pm

Hi there,

I developed a non-allergic chronic rhinitis some time five years ago. It appeared out of blue, and my nose has been blocked and runny ever since. I believe it significantly affects my breathing which, in its turn, affects my physical performance as well as sleep. There also must be a connection between this and the fact that I have been experiencing drowsiness, slowness of thought processes, and general brain fog.

I have tried to address this problem in many ways, including by using saline sprays, corticosteroids, antibiotics etc. No allergies whatsoever. Eventually, I was proposed to do a septoplasty, as my septum was slightly deviated. It was suggested that my breathing would significantly improve as a result, so I agreed. After the surgery, my breathing did improve for some time, but then the production of mucus re-started a few weeks/months after that.

At this point, I don't know what to do. I've tried most of the options to address this issue, but it seems there is no clear solution. My assumption is that I have a constant low-degree inflammation in my nose which restricts the airflow in the passageways. The surgery helped somewhat but didn't solve the primary issue of this inflammation.

Any suggestions as to what I could do? Personal experience?

Hi I will look at the book. I went to a nutritionist and she put me on magnesium and mega sporebiotoc for gut health. I am currently taking Esomeprazole but the goal is to get me off of that.
I wanted to mention this to you because I think at least for me it is stress and gut related. I hope you find this helpful. 😊

@tulipstulips A natural form of omeprazole is Gaviscon Advance, whose active ingredient is an alginate that forms what they call a "raft" that covers the stomach opening, preventimg the backup into the esophagus. Check it out. This is different from regular Gaviscon. Is not sold here but you can get through Amazon. It's shipped from England. Safer than the pharmaceutical. There's a liquid version that's pricier and a similar product called Raft, I think.

To save money, you can easily make your own Version of Gaviscon Advance. I do that. Works great, saves cash! Main ingredient (sodium alginate powder) available on Amazon. Two more sites:

Hi! Ok Here is also what I learned from seeing a nutritionist and the ent I am seeing. First there is a connection between migraines and irritable bowel syndrome so if you have migraines consider seeing a go dr. Second the nutritionist thinks I am allergic to foods containing histamines so I am now on a low histamine diet. No dairy nor fermented foods like aged cheeses. I am also taking magnesium supplements to keep my gut moving. In my case the Ent thinks I do have non allergic rhinitis but that the majority of my problems are GI related. I hope this helps you!

I had an ENT look down my throat thru the nose with a scope to see what was causing the globus feeling. Not surprisingly it was mucous and phlegm, he called it a lot of "sticky stuff". Try the OTC pills and sprays for allergy he said.

I have been experiencing this for the past three years. I have nasal congestion and mucus buildup in my throat, which are difficult to manage.

I have consulted with four ENTs. Two recommended surgery for a mildly deviated septum and a collapsed nasal valve, the other two advised against it. A CT scan showed mildly thickened nasal passages, but I have personally felt that surgery may not be the correct solution. I have also consulted with a neurologist and a gastroenterologist, but have not yet found a definitive cause or treatment.

I have tried various over-the-counter medications and nasal irrigation, the latter of which seems to worsen the condition. Additionally, allergy testing only indicated a sensitivity to ragweed, and I am already maintaining a low-histamine diet.

Given the frustration of living with these symptoms, I am eager to find a more effective treatment or cure. I would appreciate any insights or recommendations that have helped others.

@tc7231 Whether you find this helpful or not, I was allergy tested and found to be allergic to dust mites that caused the runny nose and terrible congestion at night that always seem to result in many sinus infections. My ENT prescribed after a course of prednisone and gran something, (sorry can’t remember,) along with nasal irrigation, prescribed azelastine nasal spray in the morning and mometasone at night. Wow, what a huge difference in my breathing throughout the day and night! I also took measures to reduce the dust mites by purchasing Miracle Sheets which are infused with silver threads to reduce dust mite population and being diligent about washing my sheets in the hottest water on my washer’s cycle, changing my sheets once a week, and running an air purifier near my bed every night. I have not had a sinus infection in more than a year nor any sinus difficulties.

Life long, experience! I've had a FESS with removal of most ethmoid cells, and opening up of sphenoid sinus in 2012. In addition, they opened up the downspouts to the frontal and maxillary sinuses. I had a serious relapse of sinusitis which was spilling over into my lungs. I've taken so many antibiotics over the years, but nothing was working for my chest. I saw a Rhinologist at MAYO, and they recommended me to switch to Neilmed Xylitol rinses twice a day, and to add mometasone a nasal steroid. I'm feeling better than I have in years. One has to get rid of the biofilm. Antibiotics don't touch them because of the protective layer. I also use the regular Xlear nasal spray which is another Xylitol product. Good luck!!
