Dentures plus implants after radiation
I’m an 87 year old who finished 35 rounds of radiation and 6 chemotherapy sessions to attack stage IV squamous cell cancer near my vocal cords ending 05/23/24. Recent scopings revealed no signs of tumor.
All my teeth were removed prior to radiation. My Dental Surgeon suggests dentures supported by two implants.
I’m hesitant due to my age although am in good health if this is right path for me.Has anyone experienced this and what was the outcome. Would like to hear pros and cons. Thanks much.

3 Reactions@gregfrost I have more saliva when I'm wearing my partial. Its one of the things that reminds me to put it in before breakfast. My dentist offered to make me a trial partial for free to see if I could tolerate it due to my tongue reconstruction. Maybe ask your dentist for that.

1 Reaction@gregfrost No I dont. I know I was there 30 times and had chemo Cysplatin 6 times. I was in the Mayo study and I don't recall the title. But others on this page were, too. Since then (Jan. 2024) as a result of that study, some patients have been able to stop their radiation treatment without doing the standard 30.

2 Reactions@gregfrost I’m completing my last 10 dives right now. I did 20 before extractions and now the 10 after. There are currently 2 other woman in my group doing this same protocol, one is doing it for her second time 13 years post radiation for tonsil cancer as well and also needing more teeth extracted. My oral surgeon used GEM21 in the extraction site to promote healing and PENTO protocol which uses Pentoxifylline and vitamin E as a precaution after extractions. I’m curious to know more about the new blood procedure and will ask my oral surgeon about it on a follow-up visit. Doing the HBO dives is very time consuming. I’ll keep you posted as I continue on this journey.
