Dentures plus implants after radiation
I’m an 87 year old who finished 35 rounds of radiation and 6 chemotherapy sessions to attack stage IV squamous cell cancer near my vocal cords ending 05/23/24. Recent scopings revealed no signs of tumor.
All my teeth were removed prior to radiation. My Dental Surgeon suggests dentures supported by two implants.
I’m hesitant due to my age although am in good health if this is right path for me.Has anyone experienced this and what was the outcome. Would like to hear pros and cons. Thanks much.

@gregfrost Like I stated before, most oncologists and dentists never deal with head and neck cancers and the treatments. It is rare on the scale in which they work.

3 Reactions@gregfrost I had seven weeks of radiation. No return of cancer, yet (25 years). One mandible (lower jaw bone) died from radiation, teeth gone. Five years ago I had the mandible replaced with a section of leg bone (fibula) and the blood supply and flap material from same to rebuild my jaw. All good now at age 70, working horses and living life. But did I heal OK? Aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, did you like the play?

2 ReactionsHas anyone had all uppers pulled after!! radiation and get dentures this is one of my choices to consider thanks
@gregfrost had 35 rounds of radiation - and guess my radiation was pretty intense - to the point where I had severe burns on my neck.
the implants together with bridge are ok - just have to be careful and avoid biting with the front teeth.
do have a list of 'late effects of radiation' - swallowing issues, speech issues, severe neck fibrosis, and lately misaligned vision - the left eye is not moving together or in line with my right eye.
at the moment - accepting all these late effects of radiation - just doing my best to not have the feeding tube inserted into me!!!
am 72 yrs old - and hoping that I won't have to endure much longer!!
Take care!!
@gregfrost I’m really sorry to hear this. How long has it been post radiation that you are having teeth issues? Trying to weigh the value of retreating a root canal in hopes of saving that tooth for another few years, or hopefully longer. Are others experiencing these same issues?
@lanig started at three years post radiation5 years now all teeth going bad no saliva dry mouth equals bacteria which ruin teeth I've spent thousands trying to save teeth blood flow not good root canal won't last
Has anyone had success having upper teeth pulled after !!!radiation and getting upper dentures having to make my decision soon thanks for any replies

1 Reaction@gregfrost Actually....my dentist told me that many of,his patients complain that their dentures cause them to salivate more. That's what happens to me. Mine is just a partial but it does cause me to salivate.
