Oral Lichen Planus

I ended up having all my teeth pulled, sinus lifts, 11 implants (1 failed) and Zirconia fixed dentures. Always had bad teeth and had all crowns entire mouth when OLP first started > took while figure out OLP but ended up at University of Florida Dental College for confirmation biopsies left & right cheeks. All oral medicine doctors and professors agreed I would be OK with implants. I thought getting all decay out of mouth would resolve OLP but it did not. As above members have stated, it is an autoimmune disease that comes & goes. Staying away from triggers (spicy, hot, acidy foods/beverages), taking Flucosame twice a week and trying to keep lower lip moist (otherwise constant dry patches). Sometimes think I "feel" implants and dentures more because of sensitivity that OLP causes but don't think any worse because of.

Has anyone had a flare up after going to the dentist for a cleaning? It was my first cleaning since having found out what I have, maybe a bit nervous but not to bad. 3 days later my gums got more swollen and the gum line under 3 teeth had a big white patch on it. My gums are almost always red and slightly inflamed but all of a sudden there was this patch.. Just curious!

When I was much younger than I am today, a normal dental cleaning, and I had to have a filling fixed The second I got the Novacaine to fix the tooth is when My oral planus Started. Last year I had a dermatologist tell me to use children’s toothpaste and he told me to use Tom’s strawberry, fluoride, free toothpaste. My mouth is much better and I have not had a flareup after going to the dentist since then.

@minnesota10 I have used Cleure for some time now after trying many... including Toms. Cleure has no SLS and is coconut oil based.. it's the only one that doesn't sting. Hopefully it won't happen every time but they want to do a crown, if not that replace the old filling in that tooth. The whole Idea of the procedure worries me. Glad your better!

@kmm29 I have found in 5 years of OLP almost all dental visits are painful during and after. Recommended and have been using post surgical toothbrushes because super soft and easier on delicate mouth tissues. Most of my pain inside lips and gum now OLP "under control" so dentist just pulling or poking around causes pain. Sometimes they spray Lidocaine on/around lips just so tolerate examination.

If pain & swelling continues, ask your doctor about using liquid Dexamethasone ONLY for flare ups. Continual or too much use will cause skin to become too thin and cause more problems.

Also try "Magic Mouthwash" when/if sores become painful. Compound medication needs doctor order. Very soothing. Short shelf life,

I’m glad you found something that worked for you. I forgot to put in children’s Tom’s Children’s toothpaste are much milder than the ones they think adult adults could tolerate. And there are many of us out there that can’t tolerate the stronger stuff.
