Feeling at my wits end with Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia

Posted by Jen, Alumna Mentor @sandytoes14, Aug 19, 2019

Usually I am not one to share much of my personal story but here goes...I have what is called moderate to severe degenerative disc disease, arthritis of the spine C3-C7 and lumbar spine, and Fibromyalgia. In the 20 years Ive had pain, I"ve been though many treatments including PT, tens unit, bio feedback, injections, nerve ablations, you name it. I'm prescribed Cymbalta 60 mg for Fibro and anxiety as well as 225 mg of Lyrica. I have been on and off various painkillers too. I'm currently on a long acting oxycodone of 13.5 mg and once a day one 15 mg of IR oxycodone. This has been my regime for a few months now as I switched from 15 mg IR oxycodone. Now for those who are worried about me ODing...I understand. I actually hype-vigilant about my meds. (And I have my hubby and son who watch) Years ago I was on 15 mg Fentanyl patch for 10 months and came off it in one month with no side effects.
Right now I'm really struggling with this rotten pain. I have no appetite, either can't sleep or nap during the day.

Hello, and thank you! If someone has suggestions for coping with unusual GERD symptoms (body trembling on the inside that isn't observable on the exterior, a sensation that my muscles are vibrating, and muscle weakness), I'd love to hear from them!
Thank you!

@suzanneag I took omeprozole too for years. I read about possible bad side effects. Weaned myself off . I have hardly had any of the heartburn symptoms at all! Every now and then I might have heartburn, maybe once in 6 months. HOWEVER I have a pain in right below rib. Had scans etc. Gasteronologist suggested taking omeprozole for 2 weeks. Didn’t have the pain during the 2 weeks I took it. But returned when I stopped. Now that I know it’s the Gerd I just deal with it. Now I get this sensation I cannot describe, it’s not quite chills, or vibration, like something running through my nerves. Only from waist down. It’s not too strong. Happens only when laying in bed at night. It freaks me out. Could his be what you’re also experiencing? And it’s because of the Gerd?

I’m so sorry. The fibromyalgia pain alone is difficult enough. I totally understand you’re needing pain medication. Fibromyalgia is in my back right now. But maybe it’s different a back problem. It’s constant everyday. Having physical therapy. Not taking the Cymbalta or the gabapentin anymore. Advil sometimes. My other usual fibromyalgia nerve leg/hip pain is gone (might be due to taking the LDN at 6 mg), however this back pain seems different. May be my hopeful thinking that the LDN has taken the fibromyalgia into remission but I may have a different problem with my back😳

I'm not sure what you describe is related to GERD. I'm trying to access
the site to respond to you and to read what I wrote. It was a long time
ago, and I don't recall my post. I'm sorry!

@jeannesf1 like internal vibrations? If so, that’s it nervous system dysregulation
Can be approached through calming down the nervous system

@bealillie yes! Vibrations is a likely description. It feels creepy, scares me and it’s difficult to describe. Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it! I hope this is it. Can’t wait to learn more about it😁

I am dealing with the same problem. Degenerative disc disease from L 3to L5 S1to s2. Which feels debilitating in and of itself. Accompanying that with fibromyalgia makes it really difficult to walk. My doctors don’t want to give me pain medication. Im on naproxen 800mg for the nerve pain. And i get epidural every 3 months for my back pain as well as getting my nerves burned to kill the nerves. I have tried diet and exercise and I have tried natural supplements as well which helps for a short time. No matter how much I explain to my doctor that Im in debilitating pain and that i need something to ease the pain so that i can work I still get no help. I got one month of ibuprofen. In my past before all this I never took any pain medicine or was prescribed pain medicine. So I don’t know why I can’t get something. I’ve have gone to many doctors and had many tests done hoping that what they have isn’t fibromyalgia but still have no help. I just want to know how you deal with this Im at my last straw on trying and getting no relief or results.

@sandytoes14 I'm so sorry to hear about your pain. I live with it everyday, so I guess I'm a fellow traveler.

@summertime4 wrote: "pain kills our desire and our ability to live or love life..." Wow isn't that the truth. I'm not sure I've posted here but I've been in chronic pain for a year. I had a total knee replacement a year ago which has failed and will have to be redone (by a different surgeon, in Boston!). Pain! Every day! I also have excruciating back pain from herniated discs and I've tried almost everything: PT, cortisone injections, MMJ, chiropractic. Tomorrow I'm seeing a spine surgeon - also in Boston. I'll talk to him about what he things should be done first: back surgery or the knee revision. I'm one of the furious who truly benefits from opioids and am denied them. I have no addictive tendencies (was on Oxy for 2 months post knee op and weaned with incident). If someone like me -- 8-9 constant pain -- doesn't qualify for effective drugs. who does?!

Hello, I was in the same boat as you. I had spinal surgery last year and now I have a bulging disc. I have problems walking and sometimes just getting out of bed. I have CLL, Fibromyalgia, Osteoporosis and back and disc issues. My doctor would not give me pain meds. I received a referral for pain management. Now I can take Norco. I take one of each , Norco, Celebrex and Gabapentin. It helps a lot. Good Luck 🙏😊

@babette my advice since I’ve been in pain over 30 years. If you have back issues, don’t go to a Chiropractor, they could make it worse 😫

Someone mentioned Gabapentin! I imagine it may help some people. However, I had an extremely horrible experience with it, as well as did a couple of my friends who fell and injured their selves while taking it.
My surgeon prescribed it along with a couple other pain medicines after rotator cuff surgery. Originally, I didn't take it because I was on so many meds, I had to write down every pill I took so that I would not OD. Later, I was still experiencing a lot of pain and read up on the Gabapentin. It sounded great! Started taking it for about a week. I am an older lady, and my memory is not what it used to be. But I started having frequent, severe memory loss problems. I would forget words while I was talking and couldn't complete my thoughts. It was scary! This went on for a few days. When I started investigating possible reasons for the memory loss, it became clear that adding the Gabapentin was the only thing different. Sure enough, memory loss was a potential side effect with it. Stopped taking the Gabapentin, and almost immediately, my memory returned to normal. Since then, I have become vigilant about reading up on ALL new medicines suggested by my care team. I only read info on the internet posted by the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. It is ridiculous how many horrid medicines they are suggesting and getting mad at me for refusing to take them.
My care team prescribed Norco back in 2000 for severe pain. Have used it on and off since then. During my best times, I only took 5 mg, twice a day. It took the edge off the pain, allowing me to function with daily responsibilities. Last year, I voluntarily quit and went back to work. When I got injured on the job, through no fault of my own, my care team refused to prescribe Norco for my almost constant pain. I have several reasons for the pain, and it is only getting worse since I am now 75 years old. Mind you, I had absolutely no side effects from the Norco and functioned very well and knew how to manage my pain when I over did it physically. Now my care team offered Buprenorphine patches, and I am trying them. Am on the second week. They slowly adjust it until they find the right dose. I have had absolutely no pain relief, and more upsetting is the fairly low-grade headache, almost daily with no relief. It wouldn't be a problem except I have been in constant almost unbearable pain since this last January. I certainly sympathize with all of you out there. Most of you have worse problems than I do. Back to the whole point of this post! Be careful with Gabapentin!
