Has anyone had gluteus medius/minimus tendon repair with good outcome?

I had a complete rupture of my gluteus medias tendon where it pulled completely off my hip bone. The surgeon drilled 4 holes in my hip bone but used 3 to suture my tendon back to the bone. This was done in 2010. The recovery was difficult and took several months but I have had no issues since then. The surgery was a huge success. The pain that I was in before the surgery was horrible.

Please consider a PRP injection in the tendon area before you do surgery. I had a 70% torn minimus and a 30% torn medius tendon in my hip area and I also have a hip implant. I was completely 100% healed by the PRP. I was shocked. The sports orthopedic doctor verified a full healing and I have no more pain and there is no more need for a surgeon. This may not happen for you, but I wish you the best of luck. It is worth the money.!!!

I met w/ Dr. Robert Burnett at Rush Midwest Orthopedics, Chicago. There are so few surgeons in the US who will conduct a gl transfer because the outcome is so iffy and the rehabilitation time is lengthy. I researched wide to education myself and chose Rush in Chicago. I wrote directly to Dr. Nho, Head of Orthopedics at Rush and asked for his help to locate a skilled surgeon. He referred me to Dr. B. I flew out and met w/ Dr. B. Just to know, it was a spine surgeon who diagnosed my gl tear not any one of the orthopedic surgeons in the medical facility where I am a patient of long standing who all insisted on treating me for bursitis and told me to expect to walk w/ assistance/walker going forward. Dr. B did say I can't do any more damage, a full thickness tear is just that so not rush for surgery. He is willing to complete a gluteus medius transfer, which would correct the Trendelenburg gate, but could not commit to reducing pain. I could wish AARP, any health magazine, etc., would education us, the public on gluteus tears and available treatment because it is a silent issue. Each one of us is out on our own having to manage our care. PS: In my case, my gluteus medius tear followed a hip replacement which the literature informs is a casualty of a hip replacement in an older patient. And you know as well as I, this gate/pain gives away our age when prior any one guessing our age had us at least 15 years younger :).

I had a prp injection of my gluteus medius and very good PT. I continue personal training working on my butt and the rest of my body.

@skohl I am a woman and I have been told that being a woman, active and senior citizen makes one more likely to have such a tear. After the six weeks of no weight on my foot was past I completed a block of PT which was very helpful. I began talking walks each day and then lengthened the distance. It was probably 3 months before I began to feel I could be active again, but I did not return to playing pickleball which I had done frequently before the surgery. I went to the University of Missouri Orthopedic Institute in Columbia, the surgeon was Dr. Crist who has a very good reputation.

@katrina123 That's a fantastic outcome! I have a friend with the same situation and she is in month 8 and still in pain when going up stairs.

@ennaoj44 I hope your surgery is a success. My friend who lives in Michigan had a complete medius tear and it was retracted quite a bit so Dr Nho did a graft to reattach the medius tendon. Thanks for replying.
