Has anyone had gluteus medius/minimus tendon repair with good outcome?
I have a high grade tear of gluteus minimus and smaller tear of gluteus medius. I am considering surgery but have seen some very discouraging posts for issues after surgery. I've tried PT, ice, modified physical exercise. Still aches while sleeping at night even when sleeping on "good" side with a pillow between my legs. I'm concerned surgery could have a worse outcome. If you have had a good outcome please describe your experience. Thanks in advance.

@sstopalian Did you have a tear or just tendonitis? Are you completely pain free?
@skohl I had a tear and am completely pain free.
@skohl please tell me more about her surgery and outcomes. Mine is retracted badly. What did they get the graft? how long was her recovery? how successful has the recovery been? Please tell me Dr. Nho first name and the name of his practice I have not successfully found anyone to do this surgery
@kathymrowse Dr. Shane J. Nho at Rush Midwest Orthopedics did her surgery. I don't know all the details. I'll try to find out. I think she had a graft, not a "transfer". She completely tore the medius and a partial tear of her minimus. Her first surgery by someone else failed almost immediately. She waited a year before seeing Dr Nho. It was very retracted. She is in month 8, still has some pain but not the same as pre-surgery pain. The pain is in the area of the bursa but is somehow different then the original pain. She has pain on stairs.
@sstopalian Sorry to keep asking for more info, but was your tear small, medium or a complete tear? Do you think the PRP or PT was the most helpful?
I don't know if it was medium, Was not complete. It was serious enough for two good docs to recommend PRP which is not covered by insurance. Assume you have had an MRI. If you live in NYC, go to HSS and have consultation with Johnathan Kirschner. MD. HSS is one of the best ortho hospitals that does research, as does JK, on regenerative medicine. Where do you live?
I had surgery 10-28-2025 for a high grade gluteus medius tear and smaller tear of gluteus minimus. Recovery was 12 weeks with PT starting 2 weeks after surgery. I still experience some pain for 5-6 months. I went back to work after 13 weeks. I work on my feet at a medical facility. After 5 months, I feel 95% heal. Sometimes I experience a little discomfort but overall the surgery was a success. I also have 2 small tears on the other side and I was afraid that would get worse. I continue to keep doing my strength exercises. I can now walk and hike about 3 or more miles.

1 ReactionFor those who live the experience of a gluteus medius (full thickness gl medius tear w/ fatty infiltration and atrophy the following article may answer some questions you may have. Surgical procedure and treatment for gl tears is evolving. A good read, cut and paste the following site:

I have a gluteus minimus complete tear right and left and a gluteus medius almost complete tears right and left. I have been told by orth doc to leave them alone and do pt and strengthening of the gluteus max only. I was told that surgery at my age (most ages) is not a good ideas to repari retraction as healing is very long pt and progress. I was told that senice the max muscle wraps around these other two, the repairs of the smaller muscles is not necessary, only regular strenthenign of the max. I am 83 and active and pt and the gym keep me out of pain.
@jlklms Sounds like your surgery was a success. Could you tell me if you had an open surgery or was it done endoscopically? I am scheduled to see my 3rd doc for a partial tear of gluteus minimus, and maximus muscles in December 2025. Have had cortisone injections and numerous PT sessions since then. I am seriously considering surgery when I see this doc on the 28th. I am 72 and was very active before the tear in December. I know the recovery is long. Thank you.
