Surgery went well!

Posted by drcopp @drcopp, May 8 7:34am

Hello All:
My surgery went well yesterday, using narcotics only at night to sleep, minor pain with catheter at tip of penis, using a cold pack for incisions and taking my usual medicines. My wife was a major positive, helping me to get things that I needed.
I had some balance stuff at first, but that is clearing. My dr. said my core will burn and feel like a did a million reps of exercise.
Thank you for your support!

Anyone have any tips on reducing the tenderness and pain of the catheter against the end of the penis, besides vasoline or antibiotic cream? Searching the internet now, will call the RN tomorrow.

@drcopp I adjusted the hose at leg band, so that tension was less where hose touched penis. That made a difference, although had to keep readjusting periodically. Then not just antibiotic cream, but antibiotic cream with lidocaine.

Thanks gents, I adjusted it a bit, the raised toilet seat made the critical difference, so I could keep at 90 degrees for a short time to defecate. I have a lidocaine cream only used for external purposes, so I'll look for an antibiotic with it that can be used internally.

Thanks Jeff-one of my creams has the pain killer with it, and I adjusted the hose a bit, so that it's more free when I have a bowel movement-it worked!

Blow by blow, day 4 after the procedure-doing better, used more ibuprofen and ice for the discomfort and swelling, inflammation down in scrotum and catheter. Slept using only one narcotic, bowels are consistently working. Keeping the tube clean near the penis and clear of any bowel material.

Day 4 blow by blow-I had to call the Dr. to get a lidocaine jell to apply, as no matter what I did the pain near the catheter was constant, worsened by all movements. My wife found a study on this particular sensitivity and the gel that works.
I switched sides with the patch and holder on my thigh, and depended more on the leg bag during the day. This seemed to help reduce pressure a bit. The skin under my original patch was starting to get irritated from the adhesive, so the RN suggested changing it. I also switched from the pull up Depends kind of underwear to a regular brief and added an adhesive backed absorbent pad. I used rubbing alcohol, per the instructions, to remove the patch.

@drcopp Thank you! I am taking a similar path. It will take place in June, so please keep us informed of any tricks you pick up during your recovery.

@layingthegroundwork My surgery is next week, all the sharing tips will certainly help. My past experience with the hospitals is they don't give or supply enough tips and accessories. We are left on our own to make this trip the best it can be.... so always talk and ask lots of questions.

@midwestjulyguy Thanks! I am new to this forum so I am still learning how I want to go forward. Where is your surgery going to take place? Can we ask this type of question?
