Omeprazole for somach acid affects platelet count
I just had my 3 month blood tests and during the talk with my doctor afterwards I told her I've been taking Omeprazole for stomach acid. I told her I had been using a small amount of baking soda and water and switched to Omeprazole because I was told that it stops acid from forming in my stomach. I asked her if that was ok. She said it will affect my platelet count. She said to go back to baking soda which is fine. Baking soda it is and we will see what my platelet count is in 3 months. I will have more info on if this is true in 3 months.

I have been on (omeprazsole) for 20 years and never heard that it can cause kidney disease. Will definitely ask my hematologist about that!
@catherine1290 so what is safe substitute?
@barbarian1 Omeprazole stops the production of stomach acid. I don' t know what else does that. Ask your doctor or the pharmacist is sometimes a world of information for free!

1 ReactionMy doctor said to use Pepsid complete or baking soda is fine. I use about 1/4 of a level teaspoon 2-3 times a day mixed with 1/4 to 1/2 glass of water. I don't think it tastes bad at all and works good. What I do is I'll take a plastic bottle of water and mix baking soda with it and leave it in the car and if I'm some where and need some I'll take a couple swallow's and put the lid back on for later. Works for me.

2 ReactionsMy doctor has never mentioned this side effect when taking omeprazole and I have taken it for 20 years! But now that I have ET I will ask him. I will also research that myself. Anyone else been told this by their hematologist?
@catherine1290 mine too. Nephrologist replaced it with Fomitodine and it works pretty well for stomach acid.

1 ReactionOh wow I have been taking omeprazole for about 6 years.
I started for an ulcer but continued because it stopped my bloating issues. I have Jak2 ET so my platelets are always high. I have never heard of it causing kidney disease or lowering platelets. Is there something else that is comparable? And if it lowers platelets I hate to see what mine are without it!

1 ReactionI take Pantoprezol 40mg x 2 daily. I have CKD 3a but my Nephrologist has not said anything about it. Does the Pantoprazole affect the same way?
@mwingate I have no idea.
