Omeprazole for somach acid affects platelet count
I just had my 3 month blood tests and during the talk with my doctor afterwards I told her I've been taking Omeprazole for stomach acid. I told her I had been using a small amount of baking soda and water and switched to Omeprazole because I was told that it stops acid from forming in my stomach. I asked her if that was ok. She said it will affect my platelet count. She said to go back to baking soda which is fine. Baking soda it is and we will see what my platelet count is in 3 months. I will have more info on if this is true in 3 months.

My doctor discontinued Omeprazole for causing kidney disease. I had been taking it for 5 years daily and developed Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). I also developed low platelets (Thrombocytopenia). I still have both after stopping Omeprozole 2 years ago.

I have the same results, though I took Omeprazole for 30 plus years. I have CKD stage 3 from it. I also have Thrombocytopenia as well. Male age 78.

1 ReactionI have been taking omeprazole for nearly 40 years. I was diagnosed with Essential Thrombocythemia 2 and 1/2 years ago. My platelets were nearly 900 and are now still a little high at around 450 to 490 with treatment. (Hydroxyurea) My hematologist knows the meds I have been taking and has never mentioned any problems with taking omeprazole. (71 years old female.)

1 Reaction@catherine1290 I'm not sure what my platelet count is, because they only test it every 6 months and I'm about due. Last time they tested it. I think I was about 30. I bruise horribly if I come in contact with much of anything.

2 Reactions@steveutnv 30 is pretty low! I bruise all the time too and they take over a month to go away. I have found that taking Vit K 100mg slows some of the bruising. I also take Papaya Leaf Extract to keep the platelets from falling lower. I won't know if it works until next labs in Sept.
