Neuropathy and natural supplements such as magnesium and alpha acid
First off, I want to say if I didn’t have this Mayo Clinic website I would have lost it. Thank you for all the advise and caring you give.
Second, I would like to ask if anyone has had great results from taking alpha lipoid acid and magnesium ? I’m a soon to be a 67 year old female that neuropathy hit 3 years ago. It’s a nightmare at times. I have known people with Cancer that live normal lives now, which I’m very thankful for, it seems neuropathy just goes on, no matter. You can try to do the things you used to do but sometimes it is to no avail as it’s hard to even get out of bed in the morning because of pain. I also have the pchological problem of being so reliant on my husband when I have been independent , worked out, loved to cook, now it’s hard to stand, only short periods of time. I think I am over Dr.s, it’s like chasing the wind.
My question is, has anyone tried the alpha lopic acid along with magnesium ? How many milligrams is safe for a medium size woman and what is the best brand for both of these. Dr.s will poo poo this as they want to push the drugs, I’ve been prescribed everything and couldn’t tolerate Cymbalta, I almost scratched myself to the bone. I have been on steroids several times, it can destroy every part of your body, not sure why that is not realized. I want to finally try something natural, if anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.
Thank you, Judy

Magnesium didn't do anything for my symptoms so I quit taking it. The 1200mg of ALA that I take daily seems to take the edge off of my pain.

1 ReactionIn April I started taking Liposomal alpha lipoic acid 1500 mg. I began taking just half the dose in the event it was not tolerable, now I am taking the full dose. I have not noticed any improvement yet, but I am hopeful it will work. This does not answer your question exactly, only time will tell. Stay tuned.

1 Reaction@japanjim I have tried both for about 3 years to no benefit whatsoever. I have small fibre peripheral neuropathy which has been diagnosed by a Neurologist. The cause of this affliction was an overdose of Crestor 40mg for a prolonged period.

1 Reaction@hotrod83 There is a cream I use for the itching and it’s the best cream I have found. It’s called Dermeleve cream. You can order from Amazon or the company. Good Luck and if you find something better please let me know even with cream still miserable when it wears off.

1 ReactionNeuropathy is when nerves loose some of their insulation. Vitamin B12 renews it. It is sourced in all animal and fish. Many people eat way too little animal protein. It's expensive. Med. name for B12 is cobalamin. Coba stands for the soil mineral cobalt. Grazing animals eat grass coated in soil dust containing cobalamin. We eat meat so we get B12. It is extracted by stomach acid. Us elders have less acid so we absorb much less B12. Alcohol makes it worse. So it's a good idea to take the supplement METHYLCOBALAMIN daily. Feel your neuropathy go away. Good luck

4 ReactionsI began going to a chiropractor recently with the hopes my neuropathy would improve plus I take B12 and nerve supplements, the intensity has decreased but I'm not sure if its because of the supplements or the adjustments from the chiropractor. I have been going to the appointments for a little under 2 months, I'm going to give it another month and then assess -- I am hopeful this will work. Stay tuned...

1 ReactionYou’ve said it all very well Judy. Our docs and medical system are failing us. Let’s hope technology (can you say “AI”?) will boost our collective knowlege and discovery abilities to find us solutions. Im so sorry you are experiencing this.
This disease is daily torture. I feel your pain.
I’ve tried so many things, by now my social media feed is overrun by so many encouraging concepts, including supplements. Each with their own detailed theory and explanation for what has caused it and their solution, which is guaranteed to work. Who organized the chiropractors convention that showed them the money train for promising us solutions? Now, as soon as I see “DC” I move on, quickly. When will neurologists attend a convention?? When will they step up and be experts in their area of specialty?
If I sound frustrated it is because I am! I feel variously abandoned by our medical professionals, discouraged, and tortured. The quality of our lives has been stripped away.
Rant over.
I just came accross this possible supplement solution, called Amla, a super fruit that purportedly promotes mitochondria regeneration, ultimately leading to myelin sheath health. I thought it was promising. The brand in the link attached is pricey, simply searching Amla resulted in many sources for this supplement, in multiple forms and widely varying pricing. I haven’t tried it yet so I can’t speak to it. The “discouraged me” acknowledges that if it was as good as the marketing pitch, we’d all be frolicking in a field of flowers together somewhere, celebrating our rejuvenated health, at our own convention. LOL
Darn it, this site apparently won’t let me paste in a link. Google Amla super fruit. I’ll get a better description and add another reply so I don’t lose the text of this message.
Sending hugs and prayers for a solution.
PS I believe my neuropathy was caused by statins.

1 ReactionThe company is Alevia. If you Google alevia and Amla together it should come up.
@jamessaxo
METHYLCOBALAMIN is B12 but it is more bioavailable or absorbable then the other version that begins with a C.
@johnjp I agree with you about the health care in America, I take Alpha Lipoid Acid for my Neuorapathy, It helps greatly with the burning sensation. It stops the burning . I take 600mg morning and 600mg at night. It is what is in the expensive Neuropathy medicine, but they do not put enough it their. you can get different strengths. I started with 300mg but had to increase. It will not hurt you, but the only thing is it burns my stomach unless I eat before taking it. or eat after you take it. It really works and is not expensive. you can get it at Amazon. Good luck and God Bless
