Statin Side-effects: Muscle pain and weakness
I’ve been on a statin drug for over 25 years. In the last year my legs have gotten very weak & painful. I now have to use my arms to get out of a chair & it’s still difficult. Can the side effects start after I’ve taken the statin for so long? Anyone else have this sudden problem?

Thanks so much for your info - I’ll check with my cardiologist in June!
I’m am 75 and have been taking rosuvastatin for several yrs. I started having head tremors and my dr told me that I had essential tremors and prescribed propranolol for the tremors, I took that for several years and it did not help at all. I requested to go to a neurologist and he did a few test on me then told me to stop taking the propanol because I didn’t have essential tremors. He had me do an MRI, he told me there is no red flags and everything was fine. I then looked up what the side effects for rosuvastatin and found out that rosuvastatin can cause headaches, muscle aches, abdominal pains and can cause tremors although tremors is not a common side effect. I changed doctors and talked to her about it, she took me off rosuvastatin to see if that is what is causing my tremors after a few days the tremors have started to slowly go away. Said it will take a few weeks to a month to get out of my system. Has anyone else had tremors from a cholesterol med?
@manahajpir If you have the energy to do so, and the interest, seek a source for 'ubiquinol', the form of CoQ10 most easily taken up and used by the body. The cheaper form is 'ubiquinone', which will appear on the label, or it will just say, 'CoQ10'. If you have a Costco membership, the company sells ubiquinol in Canadian stores, and my hunch is that it would be available to you as well.
Statins are almost wonder drugs, but they do have their limitations and problems. One unfortunate problem is that they also prevent one's body from synthesizing one's own needs of CoQ10, so it MUST BE supplemented. I take 100 mg daily, and have never experienced any side-effects that might be typically attributed to my statin intake, although my dose of atorvastatin is modest at only 40 mg daily.

1 ReactionBeen taking Co-Q-10 for a over a decade and recently started having muscle weakness in thighs. I started on a statin 10 years ago. I take 400 mg of Co-Q-10 ad day.
I have an appointment with my Mayo doctors to discuss. I have been told over time you can become sensitive to statin where you were not before or recent changes to medications can interact with statin and cause the symptoms. For about six months have the symptoms associated with taking a statin.
So going to try with help of my doctors to see if statin caused or something else.
I had neuropathy. My cardiologist out me on zetia. Reduced my cholesterol and no side effects. Works differently than statins.

I was taking statin for 4 years. I started showing symptoms of muscle pain and weakness in couple of years but it was totally ignored or misdiagnosed.
After this, I was diagnosed with Statin Induced Necrotizing Myopathy. An autoimmune disease that is not reversible. My suggestion for any person on statin medication is that: IT IS NOT WIRTH IT. There are other options to control your cholesterol. Right now I am on the subcutaneous injection called Repatha for cholesterol.

1 ReactionYou know many years back Statins were referred to as miracle drug to treat cholesterol and plague. Then was touted to be good for many other things. So it became with any test showing plaque the prescription was statin.
I am not just reading from other MCC posters about side affects of statins. I began reading them that after 10 years on a statin about 6 months ago started having thigh muscle weakness and fatigue in the muscle when walking on concrete.
I thought it was the concrete and muscle weakness from doing to much water aerobics and not enough weight bearing exercises.
Then read posts and did some research the cause could be statin even after years of usage. I asked my PCP for an appointment (and got one) to discuss my issues and causes of muscle weakness in thigh area.
